Dental assistants: The glue that holds dental teams together
DentistryIQ
From the late 1800s through the mid-20th century, we recognized a small team of individuals as our total oral healthcare experts – the family dentist and his dental assistant, who were later joined by the dental hygienist and the dental laboratory technologist. This team served all the needs of dental consumers. Then time marched on and our knowledge of the human body and disease processes increased. … Today, dental practitioners continue to meet the intricate needs of dental consumers by further narrowing the scope of practice to such sciences as oral implantology, cosmetic dentistry, dental sleep medicine, and oral and maxillofacial radiology. Through the evolution of these many facets of oral healthcare, there has been one constant – dental assistants.

Dental assistants share their experiences assisting with microscope-enhanced dentistry
DentistryIQ
Surgical microscopes have been used in operating rooms since 1953, giving surgeons the enhanced vision they need to perform with superior precision, and leaving nothing to chance. Technology is emerging very rapidly in all fields, and dentistry is no exception. About 15 years ago, clinical microscopes were introduced into dentistry as an aid in endodontics. Today, 100 percent of all U.S.-accredited endodontic specialty programs train their residents using microscopes exclusively.

8 steps for increasing the productivity of dental assistants
DentistryIQ
A dental waiting room is one of the least likely places most people want to spend their time. No matter what their age, most people would rather do almost anything else than sit and wait for their appointment to begin. A close look with some of the people waiting in the reception area will give you an idea on how true this premise is. How many of them keep glancing at their watches? How many of them tinker on endlessly on their phones? Waiting for an appointment always feels like an eternity, and it's a challenge that dentists and their assistants should overcome.

How can new dental practice owner deal with pushy former owner?
DentistryIQ
QUESTION: I recently bought a dental practice and it was a long transition. We were partners for three years and I now have full ownership. The previous owner always wants to find fault in the way things are run in the office. While some points are valid and could be implemented, it's been really challenging for the last few months. I understand constructive criticism is a plus and should be taken as an advantage at times. How can I handle the situation?
