A dental assistant you should know: Shanita Sylvain

The ADAA met up with dental assisting student Shanita Sylvain, who is currently enrolled in Orlando Tech's (FL) Dental Assisting Program. Upon meeting Shanita, we knew she was someone you should know. Thank you Shanita, for taking the time to share why you chose Orlando Tech and dental assisting as a career. "I gained a true understanding and appreciation for the importance of dental hygiene," Sylvain said.

ADAA's own 12th District Trustee, Shari Becker, CDA, RDA, FADAA received some welcome recognition through Komet USA. Shari was approached along with two other dental assistants each of whom was asked to create their own ideal provisional kit. The Shari Becker Provisional kit comes with seven instruments: three tungsten carbide cutters, two diamond discs and two polishers. She designed this all-in-one kit to meet the needs of the beginner, intermediate or advanced operator. More

FDA warns of problems with sterilization device

Doctors and hospitals should stop using a device from Steris Corp. to sterilize surgical tools after reports of malfunction, according to the Food and Drug Administration. The company's modified SS1 sterilizer device has not been cleared as safe and effective. Users have reported problems that could result in patients becoming infected from unsterile instruments, according to a recently released FDA a statement. More
