Putting the Cardi B in CBT: Using Stars, Sports, Star Wars, Superheroes, and Pop Culture to Make Therapy Accessible & Fun for Anxious Youth
Presented by Sandra S. Pimentel, PhD
Thursday, February 27, 2020 at 12:00 pm EST
Cognitive behavioral treatment for youth anxiety is an effective intervention approach (Crowe & McKay, 2017). While manual-based approaches offer structure for the delivery of intervention strategies, there is ample room for flexibility to “breathe life” into the treatment (Kendall, Chu, & Gifford, 1998; Kendall, Gosch, Furr, & Sood, 2008). CBT components include, for example, psychoeducation, rapport-building, affective education, self-monitoring, cognitive restructuring, problem solving, somatic management, role play, modeling, skills rehearsal, behavioral experiments, exposure, reinforcement and rewards that require an understanding and integration cognitive and behavioral principles with development, family, culture, and multiple other relevant variables. This is no easy task! As such, and in working with children and adolescents in particular, CBT therapists are teachers, storytellers, coaches, collaborative empiricists, and producers as well who must utilize creativity and fun. In this webinar, the presenter will demonstrate how to use singers, sports, superhero narratives, and pop culture references to supercharge how to teach children and families about feelings, coping, and problem solving, and engage in practice and exposures. Clinical materials will also be shared with participants.

Distinguishing Suicidal Ideation from Intrusive Self-Harm OCD
Presented by Mike Heady, MA
Thursday, April 23, 2020 at 12:00 pm EST
Individuals suffering with intrusive self-harm OCD frequently misattribute their thoughts for genuine suicidal ideation. Well-intentioned therapists, who do not know how to differentiate genuine suicidal ideation from intrusive and unwanted obsessions, often encourage their clients to get suicide risk evaluations from local ERs. However, this behavior can steer the individual with self-harm OCD further into their disorder, increasing distress and severity of symptoms. In this workshop, attendees will learn how to assess for and differentiate intrusive, unwanted self-harm obsessions that occur in OCD from genuine suicidal ideation and planning. This differentiation is key to providing adequate treatment.

Amanda Baker, PhD
“I joined ADAA in grad school in 2010 as the organization is extremely well aligned with my clinical and research interests. I am continually impressed by the multidisciplinary approaches used and presented by ADAA researchers and clinicians. The annual conferences are a highlight for me! I first went to the conference in 2010 and have been every year since. I have gotten involved in a number of ADAA activities, committees, and award programs outside of general membership which have been invaluable to me. One specific example comes from the CDLP program which I participated in in 2016 and helped me to refine a grant proposal which was subsequently funded!”
Dr. Amanda Baker is a research and clinical psychologist and Clinical Director at the Center for Anxiety and Traumatic Stress Disorders in the Psychiatry Department at Massachusetts General Hospital and Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School where she has worked since 2013. Dr. Baker received her Ph.D. from Boston University in 2013 and completed her pre-doctoral internship and post-doctoral training at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School. Dr. Baker is an active member of Anxiety and Depression Association of America where she is vice-chair of the Early Career Special Interest Group. Dr. Baker's clinical and research interests focus on the development, validation, and dissemination of empirically based psychosocial treatments for anxiety and related disorders. She has a current NARSAD Young Investigator Award from the Brain and Behavior Foundation examining the use of ecological momentary assessment and wearable psychophysiological assessment to develop intra-individual networks of panic disorder and assess change in CBT.

Psychiatric Times
The increase in repeated disasters and associated social stressors linked to global warming is likely to affect the mental wellbeing of billions of persons in the 21st century, increasing risk for depression, anxiety, PTSD, anger and violence, social disruption and displacement, and social conflict. This means that our current conceptual frame of disaster response will be too narrow to address the many problems created and exacerbated by climate change—disaster mental health no longer should remain the sole model guiding our preparation and response. We need an expanded view that encompasses diverse responses to match a greatly expanded set of threats.

A single dose of psilocybin could help cancer patients reduce the accompanying symptoms of depression and anxiety.
A team, led by investigators from the NYU Grossman School of Medicine, discovered a one-time, single dose treatment of psilocybin in conjunction with psychotherapy could yield significant improvements in emotional and existential distress in cancer patients that persist nearly five years following the administration of the drug.

Parents, educators and clinicians are seeing an alarming increase in mental health problems among young people. Various national surveys show the rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide on the rise, but what to do about it is less clear.
In July of 2019, Oregon passed a bill that allows students to take excused absences for mental health related issues. Students advocated for the bill, saying it would reduce stigma about mental health issues, and encourage young people to seek the treatment they need.
Now, the California legislature is considering something similar.

Symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and suicidality in children appear to be mediated by depression, irritability, and anxiety, according to study results published in the Journal of Affective Disorders. The apparently increased rates of anxiety and depression in youth have been blamed on smartphones and social media, but more careful studies haven't borne this blame out. There is a correlation between extreme use of social media and poor emotional wellbeing in young people, but the direction of causality is unclear — more anxious and depressed youths may be more likely to become heavy social media users.
There is little evidence that the incidence and prevalence of serious mental illnesses have increased in youth, or for that matter in adults. What appears to be the case is an increased rate of consultations for mild to moderate anxiety and depression.
