Most depression among older adults is treated in primary care, and many patients do not adhere to medication treatment. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has recently introduced initiatives to address such treatment gaps. This study examined patient-reported antidepressant nonadherence during the acute treatment period (first four months after a prescription) and identified predictors of nonadherence in a sample of older veterans.

Studies have linked the use of social media to depression, but addiction to social media, rather than use alone, may explain the connection, new research suggests. The researchers randomly selected 1,763 participants, ages 19-32, and asked them about their depressive symptoms, social media use and addictive behaviors. The research was presented March 30 at the annual meeting of the Society of Behavioral Medicine.

Results of a two-year study on health and resilience in U.S. veterans show that nearly 14 percent report having suicidal thoughts in one or both waves of the research. The research, published in the Journal of Affective Disorders, used data from a nationally representative sample of over 2,000 American vets who were surveyed twice — once in 2011 and again in 2013.
