Negative experiences on Facebook can increase the odds of depression in young people, a new study found. "It's important that people take interactions on social media seriously and don't think of it as somehow less impactful because it's a virtual experience as opposed to an in-person experience," said study author Samantha Rosenthal. The study was published in the Journal of Adolescent Health.

New research identifies that postpartum psychosis, a serious disorder, often goes undiagnosed and untreated among women with bipolar disorder. Researchers have discovered the gap in coverage from a review of literature on the rare and under-researched disorder. Postpartum psychosis almost always stems from bipolar disorder but is often missed because of its rarity and lack of research on the subject, they said.

Previous studies have largely assumed that the prevalence of mental disorders declines with old age. The results of a new study published in the British Journal of Psychiatry revel that considering the previous year retrospectively, approximately one-third of the respondents in the age group between 65 and 85 had suffered from a mental disorder, and roughly one quarter were mentally ill at the time of the interviews.

A recent national survey of 1,484 U.S. military veterans shows that post-traumatic stress disorder remains a major health problem, even for service members who have never seen combat. More than 85 percent of veterans reported exposure to a wide range of traumas, the most common of which were sudden death of a family member or friend, seeing somebody get badly hurt or killed, and experiencing a natural disaster.
