Association leaders challenged to shift mindsets to transform Africa
AfSAE
The 4th Africa Association Summit concluded in Kigali, Rwanda with a call to Association leaders to change mindsets to realize socioeconomic transformation in Africa. Held at the Intare Convention Centre under the theme "Power of Associations. Change. Connect and Change Africa," the Summit brought together delegates from 12 African countries for the two-day engagement.
While officially opening the Summit, the chief executive of the Rwanda Governance Board, Dr. Usta Kayitesi, called for the unity of African Associations to confront the continent's increasing socio-economic challenges. To demonstrate this, she recounted the reconstruction journey of Rwanda after the genocide. "When Rwanda was starting this journey, it made three very strategic choices - stay together, be accountable and be visionary - which have enabled it to make significant progress."
Dr. Kayitesi further challenged associations to be flexible, innovative and act swiftly if they are to confront the unprecedented challenges the continent face today and the kind of development agenda nations are pursuing.
The president of the African Society of Association Executives (AfSAE), Mr. Mungai Nfi, identified innovation, collaboration, and connectivity as the key amplifiers of associations' growth and called on the leaders to be ready to challenge the existing status quo in their associations. "This can only happen if we are ready to review our governance systems and find alternative ways of functioning in this post-pandemic era," he added.
Speaking at the event, the CEO of the Rwanda Convention Bureau, Ms. Nelly Mukazayire, thanked AfSAE for bringing the annual event to Rwanda and expressed RCB's continued support to Associations in Rwanda and across Africa. "We believe in the power of associations because we know they not only have a clear and direct mandate in transforming our communities but also recognize their significant role in the mice industry," she said.
The Africa Associations Summit is an annual meeting organized by the African Society of Association Executives (AfSAE) that brings together association executives drawn from professional and trade associations and Civil Society Organizations to learn, share and exchange knowledge and information about associations' development.
This year's Summit aimed to rally African associations towards leveraging their convening power to create sustainable socio-economic transformation on the continent in a post-COVID-19 pandemic world. The summit sought to build on the outcomes of the 2021 summit that explored the new emerging opportunities for African Associations in areas such as the African Free Continental Free Trade Area, Open Skies and Africa Agenda 2063 among others.
