Wildfires. Superstorms. Drought, floods, mass extinction and disease. This isn’t a sci-fi apocalypse, it’s the nightly news.
Scientists warn that the consequences of a warming planet already plague us, and we have just a few years to make a difference before things get far worse. We could hit the 1.5°C warming threshold as early as 2030, according to the latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Michael LaValley writes:
When I first considered what an architect’s most important tool might be, my mind was initially drawn to tactile utensils — pens, sketchbooks, computers and so on.
However, I soon recalled an article from Mental Floss entitled “How a Blind Architect Is Changing Design.” The piece told the story of an architect who had worked for many years and suddenly lost his sight in 2008 following a surgery to remove a benign brain tumor.

The recent death of President George H.W. Bush occasioned assessments of his administration’s legislative achievements, one of which was the far-ranging Americans with Disabilities Act, a civil rights act signed into law in 1990. The law included accommodations for people with disabilities in buildings. In the ensuing decades the ADA has had a significant impact on the design and construction of the built environment in the U.S.

Home automation has long been associated with high costs, a burdening assembly time, and a cumbersome process that impelled us to discard the idea of automating projects. However, these days are long gone.

For many architects, much of one's work depends upon the visual possibilities where space can transform. Often overlooked, many designers forget what it is like to design buildings and structures for the blind or hearing impaired. Universal accessibility and inclusive design methods are being discussed more and more within the architecture community. If you’ve been following architectural trends, you’re well aware of the importance of sustainability to a building’s success. It has moved from the earth-friendly movements of the 1970s to current building codes and project-enhancing certifications. Sustainable design is not just about saving water and energy, though. Indoor air quality, accessibility, biophilia and improved materials add environmental benefits to a space, but they have another outcome, too: They make a space healthier for occupants.

Designers and the general public alike have an endless fascination with abandoned architecture. Throughout history shifting economies, disasters, regime changes, and utter incompetence have all caused the evacuation of impressive architectural structures, which today serve as curious, sometimes eerie monuments to a bygone era.
