Architect
A perennial concern for architects is whether or not there are sufficient numbers of practitioners to serve the evolving needs of the profession. It seems as though the “sweet spot” of staffing is elusive — what seemed like a surplus of architects yesterday has morphed into a deficit today. Architecture firms, most of which fit the definition of small businesses, are not well-equipped to continually rightsize their staffing. Downsizing is an extremely painful experience for both firm owners and employees. Adding staff under the pressure of growing workloads is almost as difficult, given the training time typically required before new staff are fully productive.

Building Design + Construction
If your firm is stuck in the doldrums of low growth and low profitability, you can do something about it. I’ve seen many firms make the transition from low to high performance. But it takes more than hot breath and high hopes to fill your sails with wind. It takes a strong commitment to change from everyone at the top of your organization — and an understanding that change may be difficult at first.

It depends on who you ask, but many big practices have protocols in place to handle sexual harassment.
Until recently, architecture had long been known as an old man’s profession, a reference to how long it took (and still takes) to establish a body of work, but a reflection, too, of the degree to which men have dominated the field. In light of the sexual harassment scandals sweeping industries from entertainment to journalism to politics, architecture’s historic gender imbalance raises the question: Does it also have an unaddressed harassment problem? And if so, what are firms doing about it?

According to The Economist, 47 percent of the work done by humans will have been replaced by robots by 2037, even those traditionally associated with university education. While the World Economic Forum estimates that between 2015 and 2020, 7.1 million jobs will be lost around the world, as "artificial intelligence, robotics, nanotechnology and other socio-economic factors replace the need for human employees."

Climate change poses a serious question: how will our cities cope with rising sea levels? Some architects believe that floating buildings offer the answer, and have come up with a wide variety of designs to prove it, from simple prefab homes to entirely amphibious neighborhoods.
Leading the charge is the Netherlands, which has long been a pioneer of water-based living. With over half of its landmass underwater, the country has a well-established canal infrastructure, but is also now taking even more ambitious leaps to transform its cities.

The recent availability of automated design and production techniques is changing the development of building details. With parametric and algorithmic design methods and the use of digital fabrication, new abilities are required from architects for the design of details, at the same time as new players are beginning to take part in their development.
Although not always given the necessary attention, architectural details are of extreme importance for many aspects of a building.
