On Wednesday, Feb. 13, AIA New Jersey hosted a special symposium for New Jersey Mayors at the Trenton Country Club, in Trenton, New Jersey. Mayors were invited to meet one-on-one with regionally associated AIA NJ member architects to explore ways that design thinking can solve a municipality’s biggest problems. The intention was to show mayors that Architects are trained to be creative problem solvers and are uniquely positioned to explore the big picture while attending to the details.

Michael Bieri, AIA, PP writes: The palm of my hand shimmered gray with shiny graphite. I held my head close to the paper, then slowly and methodically rolled my pencil along the T-square, then drew perpendicular along the edge of a clear, plastic triangle. Corners. You must make sure the corners you draw just overlap so they look square and perfect. Over and over I drew the corners. Practice. Then I handed my drawing full of corners in to my teacher for a grade. The first period of each of my days in High School started in this way, learning to draft.

Not only are many print journals now gone, architectural theory courses have been eliminated in many schools’ curricula in favor of technology-centered courses, research studios, history without theory, and autonomous theory. It’s as if architectural theory, a field of inquiry developed and articulated over a few thousand years, filling archives and rare book rooms with beguiling works of architectural knowledge, was suddenly transformed in unrecognizable ways.

Spruce Street in Paterson is lined with century-old brick buildings that were once home to the silk mills that made the city an industrial powerhouse, Gov. Phil Murphy pointed out recently. Those days are long gone. But Murphy says these buildings and other vintage structures across New Jersey can be "re-envisioned and re-purposed" as businesses or housing complexes.

Recent indicators show architecture and design firms experienced a slowdown in activity during the latter part of the fourth quarter of 2018. Unstable business conditions due to concern about the pace of economic growth in 2019 and turbulence in the stock market in the months of November and December were the main reasons given for the downward trend. Firms reported clients were postponing, delaying or canceling projects as they awaited clearer signals on which direction the economy might move in the next year or two. New contracts and client inquiries also were down from the previous quarter.

The slightly trembling linework, the distinctive crossed corners, the parallel hatching, and the uppercase letters: it is undeniable that architects have developed a style of drawing over time. And though free-hand perspectives are no longer the only (or even primary) form of representation for architectural projects, they still have enormous importance during the design process. They are a design tool rather than a form of representation.

Startups, at different levels, always have an impact on the community they inhabit. Entrepreneurship helps to develop a country's economy and works as a social equalizer. Over the past few decades, green design has rapidly evolved from its early roots as a residential fringe movement, and, since then, much has changed about the way people live. Smart and sustainable design — no longer optioned as a premium, but rather an expected commodity in new construction — now prompts architects and builders to ask: What if we could take the concept a step further and build homes that benefit inhabitants as much as they do the environment?

More than half the world’s population lives in dense urban areas. Uncomfortably loud restaurants, stores, hotels, or offices are enough to keep patrons away. When planning a meeting or even a night out with friends, we are conscious of selecting a location where we can focus and hear one another. The noisier our world gets, the more difficulty we have focusing on the sounds we actually want to hear.

From the Industrial Age to the 21st century, factories have remained integral to American life. Today, a growing number of architects and developers are reinventing abandoned factories into world-class hotels, art galleries and retail spaces, giving authentic sites a new history. As many factories were designed to be civically minded, the spaces possess a level of scale, detail and grandeur that suits modern architectural needs while providing a strong foundation.

Throughout history, many great works of architecture both large and small have been made possible only through incredible feats of engineering and construction. In today's world — where office and residential towers reach ever-increasing heights, new cities appear in an instant, and stringent safety and structural requirements make building arduous and time-consuming — architects must draw on their experience and know-how to bring innovative new projects to life.

Architecture, both new and old, defines city skylines and has a lasting impact on our perceived memory of a place. And while historic architecture has its own charm, it's no secret that, at its best, modern architecture has the ability to be inspiring. Examples abound, including almost any building designed by figures such as Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaas, Santiago Calatrava and Frank Gehry, among others. Their buildings, much like a force of nature, have the ability to transform a neighborhood (almost always for the better).
