We tend to think of architects as the people who design enormous public structures for enormous corporate or municipal clients with enormous budgets. Of course, architects do design those projects, but the buildings they work on more often—and the ones many architects say give them the most satisfaction — are the homes they design or remodel for private owners, translating a wish to a drawing to a completed structure that will become someone’s dream home.

I am looking for artists working in all kinds of mediums to participate in a fall 2016 exhibit that focuses attention on the soon-to-be-demolished Queen of Angels church in Newark, New Jersey. The church and attached school are historic landmarks; built in the 1800s by German immigrants, home to Newark's first African American RC congregation, was at the epicenter of the '67 rebellion and was used by Martin Luther King Jr. to deliver a speech 2 weeks before he was assassinated. The archdiocese somehow got permission to demolish these historic structures and plans to sell the vacant land to developers.

The AIA's monthly Architecture Billings Index recovered from a dip into negative territory in February by crossing the break-even threshold in February with a score of 50.3, reflecting a slight increase in design services for the month. That's up from January's contraction in billings, yielding an index score of 49.6. The ABI is a leading economic indicator of construction activity in the U.S. that reflects the nine- to 12-month lead time between architecture billings and construction spending nationally and regionally as well as by project type. Marks above 50 indicate growth in billings for the period while those below reflect a contraction.

Legendary architect Eero Saarinen's Bell Labs headquarters in Holmdel, New Jersey, which sat empty for almost a decade after the phone company's successors abandoned it, is showing signs of new life as a 21st-century technology hub with the signing of three leases. The tenants have agreed to take a total of about 40,000 square feet (3,700 square meters) inside the secluded glass box surrounded by woods and suburban homes, about 45 miles (72 kilometers) south of Manhattan.

The level of growth, however, remains in question, as builders struggle to keep pace with demand in the face of mounting industry challenges. After a disappointing January, February's numbers beat economic forecasts.
