AIA New Jersey
Today AIA New Jersey recognizes the birthday of our great nation’s third president, Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson lived from April 13, 1743 – July 4, 1826. He was the primary author of our Declaration of Independence. He was an American Founding Father but what sets him apart from his peers, from our perspective, is the fact that he was a most accomplished architect of the classic tradition. The only architect so far to serve as president of the United States of America.

Sand is the most-consumed natural resource in the world after water and air. Modern cities are built out of it. In the construction industry alone, it is estimated that 25 billion tons of sand and gravel are used every year. That may sound a lot, but it’s not a surprising figure when you consider how everything you’re surrounded with is probably made of the stuff. But it’s running out.

No matter what your age or generation you identify with, if you work in a creative field like design or architecture, you are part of a team. It doesn't matter if all your team members are working under one roof or if they belong to different companies or disciplines. Design is a team sport. Architects, engineers, interior designers and other consultants who participate on design projects are used to this type of work environment.

Academia and architects have a close relationship. Never mind the nearly decade-long curriculum a designer must complete before attaining licensure: The formal approach of studying a problem to identify and then evaluate potential solutions is also key to architectural practice. That architects would want to teach is no surprise. Whether they should is a more nuanced question. Here are a few considerations to make before heading for a classroom.

From New York to Shanghai, coastal cities around the world are at risk from rising sea levels and unpredictable storm surges. But rather than simply building higher seawalls to hold back floodwaters, many builders and urban planners are turning to floating and amphibious architecture — and finding ways to adapt buildings to this new reality.

The rise of autonomous vehicles is inevitable and — depending on who you ask — they’ll either eliminate car crashes and save the environment, or muscle out pedestrians from the street, steal our personal data, and create biblical levels of gridlock in our cities. But despite the divide over how the technology should be implemented, the common thread that runs between apostles and bashers alike is the belief that cities, planners, and architects are woefully unprepared for the changes self-driving cars will bring.

If you don’t have much speaking experience, don’t expect paid opportunities to present themselves right off the bat. You may have to work your way up to the big leagues by accepting some smaller, unpaid opportunities first. Don’t be discouraged, though – small venues can be a great way to connect with an audience and build your reputation so you’ll become a desirable candidate for a keynote.

David Brown writes: As designers when you start a new job the real work starts day one. Schedules are always tight. Budgets are always razor thin and there is always something to do. As owner of DBI, as well as my time at Callison and working to hire architects at Starbucks, I know that the first day expectations are high for new designers start a new role.
Since most of us do not change jobs that often I have created five tips to help architect and designers get ready for their first day on the job.

David Galbraith writes:
What can fintech learn from architectural design ? Surprisingly, quite a lot. I started my career in architecture, working for Norman Foster (architect of Apple’s headquarters) and then Fisher Park, set designers for the Rolling Stones. Today, I’m a partner with Anthemis, a VC firm that focuses on financial services. And there are many lessons from my previous career that apply today as I watch the fintech sector evolve.

Some of the greatest architectural works throughout history have been the result of religion, driven by the need to construct spaces where humanity could be one step closer to a higher power. With more people choosing a secular lifestyle than ever before, are the effects that these buildings convey — timelessness, awe, silence and devotion, what Louis Kahn called the “immeasurable” and Le Corbusier called the “ineffable” — no longer relevant?
