By Justin A. Mihalik, AIA New Jersey President
It has been a very busy first quarter as your President and I wanted to share with you some of the events and projects that AIA-NJ has been busy working on. February kicked off the year with a pair of building code seminars for the 2015 IBC and IRC at the Palace in Somerset. There were well over 250 attendees to learn about the changes to both codes, which had not been updated since 2009.

Architects often find competitions — which require large amounts of work for little or no pay – exploitative. In fact, in a survey conducted last year by RECORD and the Van Alen Institute, nearly 80 percent of respondents cited lack of compensation as a problem. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey did little to improve that situation when, on March 11, it announced a competition to replace Manhattan’s 65-year old Port Authority Bus Terminal.

With the housing market coming back to life, cities around the world are seeing a resurgence of construction: New buildings, new developments, and new suburban communities are growing as fast as consumers' needs. Yet, much of this new construction looks different than it did before, which is making some investors uncomfortable.
Housing, commercial properties, and industrial spaces are changing. People want individuality, progress, and flair, and architects and contractors are eager to oblige. Rather than throwing down miles upon miles of cookie-cutter track housing, builders are inserting individuality into homes.

"For a woman to go out alone in architecture is still very, very hard," the architect Zaha Hadid said. "It's still a man's world." Ms. Hadid often stated that she did not want to serve as a symbol of progress for women in her profession. But, inevitably, she did. A study on diversity in the profession released this year by the American Institute of Architects found that "women strongly believe that there is not gender equity in the industry"; that women and minorities say they are less likely to be promoted to more senior positions; and that gender and race are obstacles to equal pay for comparable positions.

Along with their "wow" factor, they offer a certain level of convenience and control, although at a price beyond the reach of most consumers. The best applications of smart technologies have been in the area of sustainability. Combining functionality with ease of use, these products help homeowners meet their energy and water conservation goals (and budgets).
