One of my goals this year is to meet with several firms across the state to discuss with them their involvement with AIA, the value of AIA to their firms, and to hear the good, the bad and the ugly. This month I met with Stephen Schoch AIA, Managing Principal of Kitchen & Associates Services, Inc. in Collingswood. Kitchen & Associates currently has 80 architects, engineers, planners and interior designers, and was founded in 1971 by Benjamin Kitchen AIA. Stephen and I had not met one another before and we had no problem with diving into many issues. As we discussed things, Stephen mentioned that he grew up in Hackensack and I said so did my wife.

The Senate's passage of a bipartisan energy bill repeals a little-known measure that would phase out the use of fossil fuels in federal buildings, a move that is upsetting those looking for strong U.S. leadership in tackling climate change ahead of the signing of a major climate deal.
The measure in question was signed into law by former President George W. Bush in the last energy bill passed in 2007. It calls for the phasing out of fossil fuel use at all new and renovated federal buildings by 2030.

George Leonidas Leslie arrived in New York by way of Cincinnati in 1869. You'd be forgiven for assuming that the architect hoped to carve out a niche for himself in the booming construction industry, helping to erect mansions and skyscrapers. Corporate modernism is a term that encompasses a specific kind of International Style building in the latter half of the 20th century. Large corporations, flush with cash as revenues and profits exploded in a post-war boom, wanted to showcase their forward-looking attitudes and futuristic products by virtue of cutting edge innovations in modern architecture. Employing the modernist vocabulary of ribbon windows, steel framework and simple geometric forms, companies modeled their offices and headquarters in light of the vibrant transformations happening in architecture.
