We have all seen the models that architecture firms produce and display in their offices. But have you ever thought about what actually goes into making these models and who is behind the work?
The work has gone from a largely handcrafted affair to a more technologically sophisticated enterprise, thanks to the introduction of the computer, laser-cutting techniques and the advent of 3D printing. Yet the artistry behind the production of the models has remained the same.

Remodelers, design-build contractors, and architects are generally bullish on market conditions and expect continued growth this year, Houzz reports in its 2018 State of the Industry Survey issued recently.

Postmodernism is back. We see it in the slew of books and articles about the movement, in the campaigns to save some of its greatest landmarks such as Philip Johnson's AT&T building in New York, in the listings in the U.K. of notable buildings such as James Stirling's No. 1 Poultry, and John Outram's Isle of Dogs pumping station.

Building Design + Construction
While it had good intentions, sustainability was a concept that failed on launch and simply should have never been. Its original premise was to meet the needs of the present without compromising future generations’ ability to meet their needs — all within available resources. But, does that make sense? Imagine a bucket brimming with any finite resource. Over the years, that resource is diminished as a function of development, industrialization, manufacturing and population growth.

Architect
Despite the effort that goes into design, architects often remain — sometimes willingly — in the dark about how their buildings serve their occupants. Increasingly, data-driven clients want to verify the design goals of their completed projects.
And, as revealing as a post-occupancy evaluation can be, the pre-occupancy evaluation is equally as critical. Documenting the “before” state of an environment provides a solid benchmark from which to calculate the impact of the design.

There is perhaps no more divisive term in our cities than that of urban density. Often measured in "dwellings per hectare" or "people per hectare," for some it can evoke our greatest fears about what our neighborhoods might become. For others, higher density is an environmental imperative to manage the environmental crisis. For yet others, higher densities hold the key to "happier cities." But there is less consensus than we might think about density. Where does "density" end and "overcrowding" begin?

We use doors every day, but we almost never think about them. How many doors do you open without considering the centuries of technological development that resulted in the modern hinge, the ergonomic care put into designing a handle or the delicate finesse with which the door was hung? There’s a lot going on behind this elemental building component, and there’s a lot that architects need to consider.

It’s no mystery why we put people in our designs. People are the quickest way to an emotional connection. With the right visual cues, you can evoke deep feelings, turning a simple image into a source of awe or aspiration. In architectural visualization, we try to shape those feelings, working off the perceptions most of us share. While we are all creatures of circumstance, using our experiential knowledge to guide us day-to-day, a lot of our conditioning is the same.

Imagine hanging out inside a PVC bubble, moving to a town made up of construction cranes, or living in a house built with metal mesh. These are the kinds of futuristic architectural designs dreamed up during the 1960s and 1970s: a period when politics, pop culture and technology collided to spawn a new era of radical creativity in architecture.

With a generation of city planners brought up reading Jane Jacobs, another term you are likely to find peppering their documents today is "active frontages." However, walking in the shadow of blank walls in many of our cities today, it becomes clear that we are not always living up to Jacobs’ aspirations. Active frontages are designed to make a street more visually engaging. That does not necessarily mean the bohemian café-lined streets of Paris or Brooklyn but can be much more prosaic — it might be a handyman’s store, a gym or even a house frontage.
