A sliver of a silver lining in the upheaval and loss caused by the pandemic is that deferred projects have been undertaken, sometimes with beautiful results, while public buildings are largely vacant. Such is the case with the removal of non-historic vinyl flooring in Jersey City’s City Hall. Recent tweets by Mayor Fulop reveal beautiful floors that appear to be Minton tiles. READ MORE

Starting May 18, at 6 a.m., New Jersey architecture firms can return to the office as part of the allowance of non-essential construction resuming per Governor Murphy’s Executive Order no. 142 signed on May 13. While the order most specifically mentions construction sites, Governor Murphy’s office has confirmed that architects may return to their offices as well. Members should apply the order as appropriate for office conditions.

Businesses need technology to be profitable and productive. But not all technologies are capable of delivering on their perceived benefits. To make sure your investments are worth keeping, you need to perform technology business reviews.
A technology business review reveals the strengths and weaknesses of your company’s IT framework. It’s often performed by a third-party IT consultant who will give an objective assessment of your technology and provide recommendations to help you meet your goals.

Now, during Building Safety Month, it’s as important as ever to remember that buildings are designed with the intention to provide safe exit in an emergency, proper ventilation, and sprinkler coverage. After the American Institute of Architects put out its original COVID-19 Alternative Care Sites Assessment Tool at the beginning of April, the tool is getting both a second version and is now being distributed around the world.
The assessment survey was designed as an easy way for non-professionals and those without healthcare or emergency adaptive reuse experience to select sites suitable for “alternative care sites” for COVID-19 treatment.

Everyone should have an equal opportunity to become an architect and shape our built environment. The lack of racial and cultural diversity in the profession is a significant issue, but I want to focus here on one aspect of the equity problem: the women already missing from the ranks of the design profession and the potential of the novel coronavirus to diminish our standing further.

The coronavirus pandemic forced 98% of all public libraries across the U.S. to close in April according to the American Library Association. While we miss our libraries, it’s been inspiring to see the creativity and dedication library workers have shown as they’ve taken steps to continue serving the public beyond the doors of the library.

The economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic knows no bounds, and architecture has not been immune. In a mere few months, firms have gone from project backlogs and frenetic hiring to diminishing work and wage reductions, staff furloughs, and, most painfully, layoffs.

Until the recent outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the climate crisis was perhaps the fundamental design problem of our Anthropocene era. The threat of climate change has forced us as designers to reevaluate how we realize designs at all scales. Eco-friendly interior finishes, net-zero energy skyscrapers, and strategies to prevent the rising sea levels from pushing residents in coastal cities more inland are just some of the innovative solutions that have come from the increased urgency to mitigate the effects of the climate on our world.

If nothing else, the COVID-19 pandemic has shown us that we can conduct some, or most, of our work from anywhere. And architecture is not the exception. In 2017, Global Workplace Analytics found that 3.4% of the U.S. workforce, or 4.7 million people, were already telecommuting, a 91% increase from a decade prior. As of early April, 62% of employed Americans are now conducting their duties at home, according to Gallup.

In the most fundamental sense, it can be said that architecture emerged due to the basic human need for shelter. The construction of the primitive hut was realized long before the conceptual Primitive Hut was described by Marc-Antonie Laugier and drawn by Charles Eisen in 1755. Laugier theorized that man wants nothing but shade from the sun and shelter from storms- the basic requirements of a human for protection from the elements.

Although any architectural project must ensure the safety and well-being of its occupants, this goal is especially pertinent for healthcare spaces, whose primary occupants are those prone to getting sick or worsening their initial condition. For this reason, its design must not only support medical procedures in their optimal conditions, but also ensure that the environment is kept sterile and clean at all times.
