The AIA New Jersey Equity in Architecture Series Presents a Webinar on Equity in Community Engagement
AIA NJ
Wednesday, Sept. 16 is the 8th installment of the AIA NJ webinar series based on the AIA Equity Guide to the Architectural Profession. The live Zoom event will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Equitable and inclusive practices involve not only the workplace but also the communities and end-users that the profession serves to produce a more flourishing built environment. As community needs become deeper and more urgent, encompassing broad concerns such as resiliency and social justice, architects will do well to adopt solutions created in partnership with those communities. By practicing greater equity, the profession increases its value to society as well as its visibility among potential partners and future practitioners.

Design Delegation: Who Bears the Risk?
Promoted by PROSURANCE REDEKER GROUP
Together with growing pressure to shorten project schedules and decrease costs, there is a general acknowledgment that specialty subcontractors often have their own approach to fabrication and installation of project components. It is therefore increasingly common for architects and engineers to delegate aspects of the project’s design to the general contractor and its subs. But if the contract and/or project documentation is ambiguous, the design professional may look back and wish that it had provided detailed design of every connection, nut and bolt itself. Read the full article to find out why.

Architect
Introduced as part of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, Internal Revenue Code Section 179D: Energy Efficient Commercial Buildings Deduction was recently extended to the end of 2020. Often dubbed the “Green Tax Break for Architects, Engineers, and Contractors,” 179D offers financial incentives to building owners and AEC firms for decreasing a building’s energy usage through the installation and use of high-performance systems.

How the design of natural-disaster relief is complicated by the pandemic
Architectural Digest
Tropical storm season and the ongoing California wildfires have served as a reminder that COVID-19 isn’t the only disaster in town. But like the pandemic has done for most everything else, it’s made relief efforts much harder and more complicated. Some of the biggest challenges relate to the physical world: When rescuing people and pets, where do you put them that will keep them safe not only from the disaster but also from each other?

Adobe: The most sustainable recyclable building material
ArchDaily
When building for a more sustainable world, the materials you choose undoubtedly play the biggest part in minimizing your project's carbon footprint. Building a wall out of plastic bottles, for example, prevents them from adding to the hoard in a landfill. However, there is a material used for centuries throughout the world that tops all the rest when it comes to sustainability: adobe.

The golden rules of COVID-19: How to create safe, socially-distanced schools
Common Edge
Meredith Chamberlin writes: Like so many parents, my husband and I have been working remotely and homeschooling our children during the pandemic. Truth be told, there are moments I want to see my kids back at school; they no doubt feel the same. We have new appreciation for the work of educators. While it’s rewarding to see a lesson I taught take hold, double duty can be tiring.

When applying to jobs, think less of yourself and more of the employer
Archinect
Over time architects develop a distinct ability to solve their client's "problem" in a manner that encompasses their personal touch and creative aptitude. There is a realization that the project is about someone else, but the vehicle and means to realize that project is grounded in the designer.

Tiny pop-ups: delivering new experiences in small packages
ArchDaily
Pop-up architecture makes the most of tiny spaces and intimate experiences. As temporary structures, pop-ups are nothing new, dating back at least to Roman times as temporary stages for festivals called ludi. Pushing the boundaries of architecture, they feature a light-touch for maximum impact, each built to make a statement. Today, they are often designed around the full life-cycle of a project to minimize environmental impact.
