Robert Venturi, the Philadelphia architect and writer who died earlier this month at 93, had a gift for maxims and other wryly efficient turns of phrase, many of which appeared in his 1966 book, "Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture." The most famous of these was “Less is a bore” — a cheeky response to “Less is more,” Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s summary of modern architecture’s obsession with economy and rigor, with flat roofs and facades scrubbed of decoration.

Designing a home is no mean feat. It is a project of intimate importance to the client, and one small enough in which each seemingly minor decision can have a significant experiential impact. In India, the torrential rains come once a year and can cause catastrophic flooding. And these floods are only going to get worse: A 2017 study found that the monsoon in northern and central India has steadily strengthened over the last 15 years, at least partially due to rising land and sea temperatures. At one metal parts factory in Mumbai, located near a body of water that forms during the rainy season, the architect Sameep Padora has designed a clever solution for when the monsoon flows and the area floods.

They also allow you to detect and modify the key elements of a project while also addressing the project's executive procedures.

Granny flats, carriage houses, garage apartments: while accessory dwelling units go by many names and come in many forms, they’ve long been heralded for their ability to increase density without disrupting the existing fabric of a neighborhood and to mitigate gentrification by providing original homeowners steady rental income, with the added social benefit of accommodating multigenerational families whose members wish to live together.

When you bring people with various personalities, working styles and backgrounds together, a few tense moments are almost inevitable. It doesn’t seem to matter that your team is talented and diligent. Even when you put considerable effort into building relationships, conflict can happen. The issue could be rooted in a personality difference, varying communication styles, or frayed nerves from a challenging project. Whatever the cause, ignoring the problem isn’t going to make it disappear. When caught in a tense moment, try one of these questions to diffuse the situation.

The number of prisons in the U.S. has exploded from nearly 500 in the 1970s to almost 2,000 today, becoming a source of business for the architects who design them. But some in the profession are urging fellow architects to stop designing solitary confinement units in prison, saying that doing so perpetuates human rights abuses. NewsHour Weekend Special Correspondent David Tereshchuk reports.
