Tens of thousands of empty plastic bottles could be filled with rubble and earth to build quake-resistant emergency shelters for people made homeless in Mexico’s recent tremors, said architects who are urging people to donate bottles.
Starting in the shattered town of Jojutla in Morelos state, near the epicenter of last Tuesday’s 7.1 magnitude earthquake, the scheme aims to help locals build cheap shelters big enough for two to four people, made from bottles filled with the debris of their collapsed homes.

As a female architect working in a male-dominant housing industry, I might be expected to tell stories of trials and tribulations of how hard it was to break into the industry and make a name for myself. On the contrary, I find my gender to be a distinct advantage in homebuilding. OK, maybe not at first. Initially, there might have been a time where I wanted to blend in and be seen as “one of the guys," but I quickly learned that people rarely get ahead by blending in (especially designers!).

Common Edge
Breathing a building into life, taking it from mind to matter, was once a craft, a practiced choreography of brain-hand-eye coordination. The intermediate step was crucial. Fingers felt what eyes could not see, which helped designers find themselves when they were lost. Now pencils and X-Acto knives have been retired, and architectural design mediated. Technology is in; tactile on the way out, and in the opinion of the late Michael Graves, so too “the emotional content of a design derived from hand.”

Fernando Abellanas thinks he just might have come up with a solution to the lack of space in many big cities.
The Spanish designer earlier this year created a workspace that literally hangs off a highway in Valencia, Spain.
With a suspended floor made of plywood boards and metal tubes, this makeshift studio actually uses the concrete overpass as its walls and roof. The structure also takes advantage of beams under the bridge: It uses them as a framework along which it can side on a set of wheels.

What do a lot of recent architecture college grads have in common besides their degree? Student loans and disillusionment. But with the emergence of the digital age and “side-hustle economy,” millennials are learning how to monetize their passions, and now 1 in 4 Americans are making money digitally. Side-hustling has become so popular that there is even a school for it. The difference between a side-hustle and a second job is that side-hustles aren’t just about giving yourself a raise. Your side-hustle is something you truly love to do, and would probably do anyway, but now you get to share it with the world and make a little extra cash in the process.
