Nurse income may be falling, according to Medscape's 2018 RN/LPN Compensation Survey of 5011 registered nurses and 2002 licensed practical nurses. In 2017, for the first time, average annual nurse wages and hourly rates of pay failed to increase significantly. After adjusting for inflation, income may even be falling, according to the report's authors.
We are excited to launch the newest addition to our communication and engagement platforms, the ANA\C Newsletter! The inaugural Fall 2018 General Assembly Special Edition is coming out this Friday, so keep an eye out for it.
How will it be used? The Newsletter will feature regular work reports, organizational messages, e-blast materials, projects updates and other interesting aspects of ANA\C work.
What about ANA\C Weekly Flash? We will continue to use this vehicle for immediate office updates, meetings, state and national news, immediate offers and relevant industry news. We will include e-blast info here and not send a separate nlast. Only when absolutely necessary (due to time constraints and emergent content) we will send individual e-blasts for impending events, registrations deadlines, local forums, etc. ANA\C Newsletter will start with bi-monthly editions, giving our Editorial Task Force time to get familiar with the platform and create our newsletter processes.
Where is The Nursing Voice? A fantastic digital publication of the beloved newspaper is coming in Spring 2019! Stay tuned.

Americans are living through the deadliest drug crisis in the nation’s history. Opioid-use disorders affect an estimated nine out of every 1,000 Americans. One of the ways Congress has moved to address the opioid epidemic is through the SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act, which includes provisions intended to substantially increase access to treatment using medications such as methadone and buprenorphine, the gold standard treatment for opioid-use disorders. Yet more may still need to be done to increase the use of medication-assisted treatment as much as is needed, given the scale of this epidemic.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus is highly resistant to treatment with antibiotics.
For this reason, it is important to find different ways of attacking and destroying this bacterium in infected people — before it puts their health into serious jeopardy.
A new study by investigators from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, with colleagues from academic institutions in Thailand, may offer fresh hope in this regard.

As in other industries, change is a constant in healthcare. New medications, treatments, and technologies continue to emerge at breakneck speed: robotics and artificial intelligence, EMRs/EHRs, video-based medical appointments, and other innovations have altered various aspects of healthcare management and delivery. Still, this particular industry can feel unadventurous, old, and out of touch when it comes to long lines in ER waiting rooms, the ubiquitously disappointing 15-minute doctor visit, and the cost of prescription drugs and health insurance.

Walter and Eliza Hall Institute researchers have genetically engineered a new laboratory model that enables accurate testing of anti-cancer drugs by mimicking the complexity of human cancers.
Using this advanced model, researchers will be able to discover the safest and most effective ways to use promising drugs called MCL-1 inhibitors in the clinic.
A small but growing proportion of the youngest children in the U.S. have not been vaccinated against any disease, worrying health officials.
An estimated 100,000 young children have not had a vaccination against any of the 14 diseases for which shots are recommended, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report.
"This is pretty concerning. It's something we need to understand better — and reduce," said the CDC's Dr. Amanda Cohn.

Using videoconferencing equipment to diagnose and evaluate patients at an ER or clinic is a well-established way to help patients experiencing a medical emergency. Yet, research has also now established that telemedicine can also help patients dealing with chronic conditions manage their treatment much more easily. This will save both patients and doctors time and money. Adapt these proven facts about telemedicine to benefit your organization's patients more effectively.
The unemployment rate is at its lowest level since 1969. Friday’s jobs report shows that healthcare, along with business services, transportation and warehousing jobs, fueled the country’s job growth.
Healthcare employment rose by 26,000 in September, though the bulk of those jobs came from ambulatory healthcare services. The U.S. has added 302,000 healthcare jobs over the course of 2018.
Registered nurses dominate headcount across all professions.

Despite the risks associated with surgical smoke, evacuation devices have yet to be implemented in most operating rooms. A survey conducted by Stryker Instruments sought to quantify the level of OR nursing knowledge regarding surgical smoke exposure and the barriers around smoke evacuation system use.
More people are now able to get a vaccine to protect against a virus that causes cancer in more than 3,300 women and men each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The Human papillomavirus vaccine is being offered to a wider age group. The FDA has now approved the vaccine for adults 27-45.
Occasional fasting may help control type 2 diabetes, a small Canadian study suggests.
"The use of a therapeutic fasting regimen for treatment of [type 2 diabetes] is virtually unheard of," said Dr. Jason Fung, of Scarborough Hospital, in Ontario, and colleagues.
But this trial showed that 24-hour fasting regimens can significantly reverse or eliminate the need for diabetic medication, the study authors said.
