Erickson Moving Headquarters to Portland

Global heavy-lift helicopter operator Erickson Air-Crane is moving its headquarters to Portland and could have a new moniker as early as this spring. Erickson Air-Crane announced its intentions at this week's Heli-Expo in Anaheim, Calif. The firm began rebuilding and maintaining mosquito-looking S-64 heavy-lift helicopters commonly known as air-cranes at its Willow Springs Road site, just west of Interstate 5, in the mid-1970s. More
Turkish Airlines 737 Crashes During Landing in Amsterdam, Nine Dead
A Turkish Airlines plane with 134 passengers and crew aboard crashed in light fog while trying to land at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport on Wednesday, killing nine people and injuring dozens. Officials said some 84 people were taken to hospitals, including 25 who were severely hurt, when flight TK 1951 from Istanbul crashed into a field short of a runway at Schiphol, Europe's fifth-largest airport by passenger volume. Delta Mechanics Decline Union Representation
An effort by mechanics at Northwest Airlines to expand their union representation with the recent acquisition by Delta Air Lines has failed. This week, the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association asked the National Mediation Board to end its designation as the representative body for mechanics at the carrier.

Southwest Will Pay Penalty Over Lapses

Southwest Airlines agreed Monday to pay a $7.5 million penalty over a series of high-profile maintenance lapses disclosed last year that involved missed checks for potential cracks in the fuselages of 46 aircraft. While the penalty is less than the $10.2 million proposed by the Federal Aviation Administration, it is the second-largest penalty ever levied against a carrier and comes with a lengthy series of revisions to maintenance practices that Southwest agreed to adopt.

There were close calls recently: a jet running off a runway in Denver and catching fire as all 115 aboard escaped in December; the miraculous, fatality-free landing in New York's Hudson River last month by a jet that had lost power in both of its engines. So how safe are we? Thursday's crash of Continental Connection Flight 3407 into a house in suburban Buffalo killed 50 people, ended the longest period in U.S. aviation history without a major crash — and was a vivid reminder that although air safety has improved dramatically in the past several years, some long-recognized risks remain.

This Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin (SAIB) alerts you, owners, or operators, of all serial numbers of Piper Aircraft, Inc. (Piper) Models PA-34-200, PA-34-200T and PA-34-220T airplanes of an airworthiness concern and the potential failure of the nose landing gear to extend as a result of the bolt head becoming jammed against the aft tube assembly-nose gear door actuation. This failure is due to a hex-head bolt on the nose gear centering spring rod-end to the nose gear strut, coming in contact with the nose gear door actuation aft tube assembly. This action impedes/prevents the extension of the nose gear assembly.
