My son took this photo in Italy. A great example of the impact man has when we develop an area. As a development consultant, we help owners and their project teams identify and address subsurface risks. Unlike most developers or contractors, we get the opportunity to see a significant number of projects developed across our region and the country as we get to work on many projects with many different owners and contractors at the same time.

Harvard Business Review
The Technological Revolution has begun, upsetting the proverbial applecart created during the Industrial Revolution. In fact, a recent MIT survey of 1,000 CEOs from 131 countries and 27 industries, in organizations of varying sizes, found that nine of every ten chief executives "believe their businesses are being disrupted or reinvented by digital business models, and 70% believe they do not have the right skills, leader, or operating structure to adapt." What's a CEO to do? Rapidly adopt a fundamentally new management model comprising 23 new management practices, including "empowerment, experimentation, collaboration, data, and speed." The key to the concept is creation of small, empowered teams that rely on real-time information systems to support decision making. and they expect these teams to start small, iterate, experiment, and adapt.

Most time-strapped executives know they should plan ahead and prioritize, focus on the important as much as the urgent, invest in their health (including getting enough sleep), make time for family and relationships and limit (even if they don't entirely avoid) mindless escapism. But doing this is easier said than done, as we all know — and as I, too, have learned during years of trying unsuccessfully to boost my effectiveness.

The Part 107 rules did a lot to open up United States airspace to commercial drone operations, and there's never been a better time to incorporate aerial imaging into construction and real estate. Even though construction growth projections for 2017 might not be so bullish as recent years, there's still plenty of opportunity, especially in larger cities.

"Who got caught being awesome?" That's the question Alex Charfen, CEO of Austin, Texas-based training and business consultancy Charfen, asks his employees every morning at 9:17 a.m., during their daily huddle. Charfen started this practice because he recognized that as happens at other rapidly growing companies, his employees weren't being properly recognized for their hard work and achievements.

Devastating tsunamis could be halted before hitting the Earth's shoreline by firing deep-ocean sound waves at the oncoming mass of water, new research has proposed. Dr. Usama Kadri, from Cardiff University's School of Mathematics, believes that lives could ultimately be saved by using acoustic-gravity waves against tsunamis that are triggered by earthquakes, landslides and other violent geological events.

Seeking to meet growing electric demand in the Hamptons with renewable energy, the Long Island Power Authority approved the nation's largest offshore wind farm recently, set for the waters between the eastern tip of Long Island and Martha's Vineyard. The farm, with as many as 15 turbines capable of powering 50,000 average homes over all, is the first of several planned by the developer, Deepwater Wind.

Thirty-two states added construction jobs in 2016 as a dearth of experienced workers kept contractors in many states from hiring as many employees as they would have preferred, according to an analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America of Labor Department data and the association's own survey. Association officials said the new Trump administration could help by including workforce development measures as part of its promised new infrastructure program.

A new presidential administration almost certainly will mean a new direction for OSHA, legal experts agree. Regulations could be undone. Funding could decrease. Strategies for worker safety could shift 180 degrees. How soon will changes arrive? Which objectives will take priority? Who will next be chosen to lead OSHA? Those decisions ultimately lie with President Donald Trump and his team as they settle into the White House.

There's no denying that the available skilled labor pool is shrinking. The Associated General Contractors found in its annual survey that even more employers anticipate difficulty in finding qualified help this year than they did in 2016. It's not just field workers and supervisors who are in short supply. Project managers are hard to come by, and positions that require technical expertise, like mechanical and electrical estimators, are incredibly difficult to fill.
