A federal appeals court has ordered the Environmental Protection Agency to revise its lead-paint standards within 90 days and write new rules within a year.
The 2-1 decision by the San Francisco-based Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit came in response to environmental groups demanding that the EPA act upon a rulemaking petition it granted several years ago. The environmental groups involved in the legal action argued that the most up-to-date scientific research shows today’s standards for mitigating lead-based paint don’t go far enough to protect children. The court accepted that argument.

Global demand for doors and windows is projected to grow 4.5 percent per year by 2021, rising from $172 billion to $214 billion during that time, according to a new study from The Freedonia Group, a Cleveland-based industry research firm.
The U.S. and China will account for 65 percent of the global sales growth during this period, according to the report.

In its Federal Register notice, the Department of Labor explained the 2 percent increase is mandated by the Federal Civil Penalties Inflation Adjustment Act Improvements Act of 2015 (Inflation Adjustment Act), which requires certain divisions of the department to adjust its monetary civil fines in step with the rate of inflation by Jan. 15 of each year.

The Hill
The Canadian government on Wednesday, Jan. 3, said it has launched a legal challenge to hefty duties imposed by the United States on its softwood lumber industry.
Chrystia Freeland, Canada's minister of foreign affairs, said Ottawa is following through with an appeal of the U.S. International Trade Commission's decision made in November to levy countervailing and anti-dumping duties on lumber imports.
