Prices for materials used in the door and window industry rose in December, according to the final Producer Price Index data for 2017 from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The monthly PPI for flat glass in the commodity category increased 0.4 percent in December from the previous month, and it’s up 1.3 percent from December 2016. According to the BLS, the commodity classification “organizes products and services by similarity or material composition, regardless of the industry classification of the producing establishment.”

Construction fraud — it happens in owner-contractor and contractor-subcontractor relationships, and it's committed by employees of any type or size of contracting firm. Last year’s Kroll Annual Global Fraud and Risk Report showed that 70 percent of construction companies experienced at least one incidence of fraud in 2016. The number was 75 percent in 2015, so a 5 percent reduction of such a high percentage isn't much to celebrate.

Canada is in the appeals stage of its softwood lumber dispute after the U.S. Department of Commerce imposed final duties earlier this month.
“The Government of Canada will continue to vigorously defend our industry and its workers against protectionist trade practices,” Minister of Foreign Affairs Chrystia Freeland said in a statement. "U.S. duties on Canadian softwood lumber are unfair, unwarranted and troubling."

For Construction Pros
Construction spending was up 0.8 percent in November on broad-based strength. Both public and private spending increased for the third straight month. Public spending has gained traction in recent months, but remains down 2.8 percent year to date.
The Wells Fargo Economics Group’s analysis of the U.S. Census Bureau’s monthly estimates of value of construction put in place says revisions to the October numbers brought growth in total outlays to an 8.8 percent three-month-average annualized growth rate in November.

OSHA has renewed its alliance with the National Association of Women in Construction “to continue promoting safe and healthful working conditions for female construction workers.”
As part of the OSHA Alliance Program, the five-year pact will target hazards specific to women in construction, including selection of personal protective equipment, sanitation, and workplace intimidation and violence, a Dec. 15 OSHA press release states. The alliance began in 2013.
