Americans are expected to spend nearly $340 billion in 2018 to upgrade or to patch up their homes, a 7.5 percent increase from last year, a report by the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University released recently showed.
This year is shaping up to be the best year for home remodeling in more than a decade, according to the center.

A new discovery by Berkeley researchers may soon bring us windows that automatically tint on a sunny day to block the heat while also generating electricity.
Peidong Yang, a professor of chemistry and faculty scientist at Berkeley Lab, and his colleagues have tweaked the chemical structure of perovskite — a versatile material that already rivals silicon-based solar cells — so that the material turns from transparent to opaque when heated and also converts sunlight into electricity.

According to a report from 3DPrint.com, NorDan AB has contracted to purchase a 3-D printer from BLB Industries, another Swedish company. The device will enable NorDan to manufacture windows up to 1.5 meters wide and 2.5 meters tall.

A new study suggests that automation could eventually replace up to 49 percent of the country’s flesh-and-blood construction workforce by 2057 — that’s around 2.7 million people. However, some who specialize in glass and fenestration installation might be safe — for a while.
The report, from the Midwest Economic Policy Institute and the Project for Middle Class Renewal at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, found that 10 distinct skilled trades are at risk of being automated in the future.

North American softwood lumber production was up 0.6 percent in the third quarter of 2017 over 2016. The increase leveled off after increases of 1.8 percent in the first quarter and 1.7 percent in the second.
Canada production declined 3.4 percent, says the Western Wood Products Association, while U.S. sawmills increased production by 4.1 percent.

U.S. homebuilding fell more than expected in December, recording its biggest drop in just over a year, amid a steep decline in the construction of single-family housing units following two months of hefty gains.
Housing starts decreased 8.2 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.192 million units, the Commerce Department said recently. November’s sales pace was revised up to 1.299 million units from the previously reported 1.297 million units.
