A new study from HomeAdvisor says the U.S. home improvement industry will be severely impacted by unprecedented skilled labor shortage. A large part of the shortage is due to the lack of millennials filling the gap as older workers retire.
"The labor shortage reveals a generational imbalance as the current aging workforce struggles to attract Millennials into its ranks," said Marianne Cusato, HomeAdvisor's housing expert and professor of the practice at University of Notre Dame's School of Architecture.

Film that stops birds from colliding into glass is being put to the test in a new Duke University student-led study. Ph.D. student Natalia Ocampo-Peñuela, who studies conservation biology, wanted to see if she could do something to lessen the bird fatalities at one of the university's most accident-prone buildings, the Fitzpatrick Center.
"We've been informally documenting collisions since 2012," she says. "A lot of the birds were from Fitzpatrick. Whenever I would walk by the building, I would oftentimes find dead birds."

Construction ranks among the top nine occupations with the highest risk for suicide, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
"Demanding physical work, coupled with the stresses of seasonal employment and minimal access to mental health care, often create a workforce vulnerable to mental health challenges like depression, substance abuse and suicidal thoughts," says leading suicide-prevention expert Sally Spencer-Thomas. She is CEO and co-founder of the Carson J. Spencer Foundation, a Colorado-based nonprofit that is finding innovative ways to make suicide prevention a priority in the workplace.

U.S. home starts fell for a second consecutive month in January as builder confidence in the market continued its decline.
Construction on new homes fell 3.8 percent in January to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.143 million, according to preliminary data from the Commerce Department. That rate is 1.8 percent above the January 2015 figure.
Single-family starts fell 3.9 percent to a rate of 731,000, up 3.5 percent from a year ago, while apartment starts fell 2.5 percent to 354,000, down 3.8 percent from a year ago.

More than half of the experts surveyed in the latest Zillow® Home Price Expectations Survey said the continued decline of undocumented immigration in the U.S. will drive up construction labor costs.
The number of immigrants in the U.S. who entered the country illegally has remained flat for more than five years, according to data from Pew Hispanic Center. The undocumented Mexican immigrant population in the United States, in particular, is now 20 percent smaller than it was in 2007.
