Lead exposure may contribute to more than 400,000 deaths of adults each year in the U.S., according to an estimate published today in the journal Lancet Public Health.
That number includes 256,000 annual deaths from cardiovascular disease, suggesting that lead exposure may be a significant, overlooked risk factor for this leading cause of death. The estimate was extrapolated from a nationally representative sample of 14,289 adults, whose blood had been tested for lead sometime between 1988 and 1994.

Home Depot announced Thursday, March 8, that it will donate $50 million to train 20,000 people as construction workers over the next decade, helping efforts to ease a dire shortage that’s curtailing homebuilding and driving up house prices.
The Home Builders Institute, the industry’s education arm, will use the money from the Home Depot Foundation to train veterans and U.S. Army soldiers who will soon be returning to civilian life, high school students and disadvantaged youth.

The administration on Thursday enacted tariffs of 25 percent on steel imports and 10 percent on aluminum imports, however imports from Canada and Mexico were exempted from trade sanctions, which could lessen the tariffs’ effects on the door and window industry.
Canada is the number one supplier of both metals to the U.S. It represents about 41 percent of aluminum imports and 16 percent of steel imports.
