IRS Form 5695, to be used by homeowners who buy new replacement windows and doors, allows a tax credit (better than a deduction because it's a direct reduction in taxes) for the purchase and installation of new windows. The new rule is that the windows must comply with Energy Star version 6.0. While the maximum credit remains at $200 for windows, qualified insulation of parts of the home also will effect a credit up to an additional $300. All that is required is a certification letter from the package supplier, and AWDI offers the qualifying letter to participants in their program and has been since 2005. AWDI's program has been updated for 2016-2017 to highlight the latest addition to their Door and Window Tax Credit Program so window dealers can offer the full $500 credit to their customers. There's still time for 2016. Contact AWDI for more information.

Windows are a key factor in making buildings more energy efficient, by helping to control heat and light levels. For instance, windows that transmit visible light but block infra-red light could reduce the need for air conditioning in buildings. "Lighting and air conditioning account for 30-40 percent of the total energy used in buildings, most of which is exchanged via windows," says Yanfeng Gao, one of the authors of the research and a professor at Shanghai University.

Meeting a deadline is a crucial part of any project. While construction managers might be able to carve out some wiggle room within the overall timeline, there is a lot riding on a timely completion. A steady release of funds could be tied to finishing project milestones, or the owner could be depending on revenue from operations — like in the case of a hotel or restaurant — to pay development fees and other project bills.

Vern Yip writes: "I've always been fond of the warming quality natural light introduces to the interior spaces of a home. The bigger the expanse of glass, the better ... Often taken for granted, windows and scenic doors (ones featuring large expanses of glass) may be the single, most perfectly conceived building blocks ever invented — simultaneously delivering exposure and protection to almost every space we inhabit.
Done right, windows and scenic doors can dramatically increase property value, showcasing epic vantage points, diminishing boundaries delineating inside from out or simply brightening interiors by letting the sunshine in."

Word of mouth, social proof, or in other words — popularity — has always been a key to success in business. Today that involves online reviews.
Some small businesses (especially those offline) have their blinders on when it comes to the internet. They think because they serve a localized base of consumers — a portion of which is foot traffic — that what people are saying on the web is irrelevant.

April really is the cruelest month. But when British poet T.S. Eliot immortalized those famous words in his literary masterpiece "The Waste Land," he never could've known that they would end up ringing true for business owners and entrepreneurs living in 21st-century America.
Getting all of your receipts, financial documents and bank statements in order can be an arduous task. But there are solutions so that you can focus more on running your business and less on sifting through mountains of paperwork. Seeking outside help from a trusted accountant or bookkeeper is a great option, and technology has taken the grunt work out of organizing and preparing your own tax records — making April not seem nearly as cruel as it used to be.

From the plate-glass windows that welcomed light into turn-of-the-century high-rises to the climbing glass-and-steel assemblies that shape projects today, architectural glazing has been a definitive feature of building design for more than a century. The trend is prevalent in commercial and residential buildings, which increasingly prioritize glass for its ability to bring daylight inside. However, typical glazing systems — from single insulated glass units to full-on curtainwalls — tend to be less energy efficient than the surrounding wall system.
