Two forms of legislation which might impact window film businesses have surfaced in Washington and New York. Both legislatures will consider making changes to current industry laws during this years’ sessions. The legislation introduced in Washington relates to installing safety glazing or film sunscreening materials and was introduced in the Senate. The new bill, also referred to as S 5881, looks to implement fines for those who perform the installations for commercial gain.

As construction on the 300,000-square-foot “Catalog” addition at the base of Willis Tower progresses, crews recently completed the large curving skylight capping the project’s upcoming retail and dining hall. The swooping 240-pane diagrid window will not only flood the space with light, but provide unobstructed views of the famous 1,453-foot-tall skyscraper above. Designed by the Chicago office of global architecture firm Gensler, the overhaul of the building’s base is the most visible part of a larger $500 million renovation plan unveiled in 2017.

A West Virginia community college is dedicating a day-long event to recruiting students for its upcoming 10-week lumber and mill training program. New River Community and Technical College in Summersville, West Virginia, says the training program will allow students to gain skills through the college to prepare them for a paid internship in the lumber industry, and was developed by working with lumber mills and identifying training needs for current and potential employees.

Furniture Today
In more tariff news for furniture importers, U.S. lumber and log exports to China will be hit with the increased retaliatory tariffs China is imposing on these products. The list of products affected includes both logs and hardwood lumber, based on information from Appalachian Hardwood Manufacturers Inc., which has issued an alert to its membership. Taking effect June 1, the increases affect some $60 billion in products and are in response to the increased U.S. tariffs, to 25% effective May 10.

If high-performance glazing was installed in all buildings in the European Union, it would have the potential to deliver up to 75.5 million tons of oil equivalent (Mtoe) of energy savings in 2030 according to the “Glazing Potential: Energy Savings & CO2 Emission Reduction” report by Dutch-based independent research institute TNO Built Environment and Geosciences, commissioned by Glass for Europe.
