Everyone is familiar with the "3 widths" and "3 heights" mantra of replacement window measuring, and while that is a safe approach to most drop-in pocket window installations, it misses plumb, level, square, planar, crown and trapezoid. And if you don't think those are so important, ask the installer who faces a sill that is 1/8 inch out of level (meets code) causing the new window to resist leveling because to do so makes it too tall, or facing a bowed old frame preventing good contact with the blindstop. Full frame removal opens a whole other can of worms because you can't get behind the wall, siding or trim. AWDI's 2017 Guide to Window Installation has expanded the measuring section to 8 pages because you can't measure too carefully or accurately — before the job.

Before they even pick up the phone, homeowners are searching websites, reading reviews on Houzz and Yelp, checking Facebook pages, and researching all the brand names you install. Still, many in the home improvement industry have been slow to update their in-home sales processes.

You can’t ask a doctor to tell you what's wrong but then say you might not pay for the diagnosis. That's according to Brian Altmann, president of DBS Remodel, in Poughkeepsie, NY, when asked whether builders and remodelers should charge for providing project and cost information to clients considering their services.
Homeowners are often quick to push back if they're quoted a price for information they've long known to be available for free. Yet there is no shortage of stories from builders who discovered the free estimates they were handing out were being used to negotiate a lower price with another contractor the homeowner had already decided to hire.
