The "random" audits of small businesses and their owners' tax returns by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service to find unreported income has left the small business taxpaying community feeling like they are being picked on and unduly forced to go "through the wringer."
That is according to Donald T. Williamson, a professor of taxation at American University's Kogod School of Business, Washington, D.C., who says the growing number of IRS audits seem to disproportionately target small business taxpayers.

Flat glass prices again ticked up slightly in August, but year-over-year increases continue to settle, according to the latest Producer Price Index report released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Prices increased 0.2 percent last month after a 0.6-percent increase in June and July combined. August's mark is the sixth month-over-month increase for the year. The material's index is up 3.9 percent from August of 2015 — for comparison, the year-over-year increase was as high as 7.7 percent in May.

Home builder construction stumbled in August, another sign of choppy momentum for the housing market.
Housing starts ran at a seasonally adjusted annual pace of 1.14 million, the Commerce Department said recently, 5.8 percent below July and missing forecasts of a 1.18 million pace. That was 0.9 percent lower than a year ago.
