There's been lots of debate lately in housing circles about the impact of student debt on home ownership. Now there's a new study out that attempts to put a number on that impact: 414,000. That's how many home sales will not happen this year because of high levels of student loan debt, according to a report from John Burns Consulting, an Irvine-based firm that advises home builders. That's equal to about 8 percent of all home sales and enough to dent the housing industry by $83 billion a year.

The Herald Business Journal via HeraldNet
Most people wouldn't expect to start in a support role at a company, and in just over a decade become the firm's president. Melissa Benton did exactly that. "As the economy was on the downturn, I slowly started to take on more roles because the company was getting smaller and I needed more work. I acquired different departments, slowly moving out of HR, and more into sales, engineering and client services," Benton said.

Called Shade, it consists of 140 square meters of glass panelling, divided into triangular cells, each of which is coated with a special film. This film changes opacity based on two things: sunlight and wind. As the sun moves across the sky during the day, the light shifts from sharp in the morning to softer in the afternoon.

Better, faster, cheaper is the mantra for today's building industry. Constraining costs and schedules while improving building performance and safety has placed additional pressure on builders and the design community to find more efficient, productive and profitable ways of working together.
