EnergyStar Version 7 Window Requirements Not Matched by Installation Methods

EnergyStar Version 7 is requiring higher performance windows - U-Value of 2, which is an R-5 and the current install procedures promoted by FGIA (AAMA) and ASTM will not produce an in-service performance of the new windows anywhere near R-5. We have lobbied EPA to be aware of this.
EPA responds that "…proper installation is important to ensure that consumers get the rated performance from their fenestration products." and they further state: "EPA included in Version 6 requirements that certain elements be included in installation instructions to help ensure products are installed correctly." They have also stated they would review alternative installation procedures and consider adjustments to the current installation requirements. They understand that higher performance is not just vested in the product but in the install as well.
AWDI has developed and laboratory tested, here in USA and in Germany, alternative procedures and we have achieved R-5 in-service performance for R-5 windows. Check out the preliminary review: (http://www.wixsys.com/R5Install.pdf).
We will be including detailed instructions to the WIXSYS online portal under a new category labeled R-5 Performance Installation to bring the R5 alternative to your customers as you offer R-5 products. Our R5 alternative has been used in residential replacement, commercial re-hab, and in major construction commercial buildings. It's cost effective, and it works. Contact AWDI for more information.
