AWDI and Product Liability Prevention
In our multicultural society, and especially in the construction trades, workers and installers come from many backgrounds. How does a manufacturer deal with providing proper installation instructions and safety/warranty information when more often the users likely speak everything but English?
We’ve all seen the packaged instructions where one column is English, the next is Spanish, the next is French, etc., etc. The litigated answer may surprise, but the best global solution may be offered by IKEA: no written instructions at all. They just use generic people figures (like emoticons, actually) to illustrate the step-by-step for assembling their items — universal and global. The answer is: Pictorial.
At AWDI, when we assembled our 160 manual of Installation Instructions, we structured the manual and our WIXSYS online library, on step-by-step illustrations. We attempted to make a more useful resource than the cumbersome verbiage in ASTM-2112 and other guides. Plus, it makes it far more useful on job sites and links to products in stores. Best part yet? It is universal, and satisfies the multicultural needs of the construction industry, while conforming to norms for product liability.

U.S. construction spending unexpectedly rose in September as a surge in public construction outlays offset the third straight monthly decline in investment in private projects.
The Commerce Department said recently that construction spending increased 0.3 percent to $1.22 trillion. But August’s construction outlays were revised down to show a 0.1 percent gain instead of the previously reported 0.5 percent rise.

Entrepreneurs are more likely to plan the future than evaluate the past. How can you fix something when you don't know it's broken? How will you celebrate achievements when you don't realize how significant they are to the big picture? If you do not conduct a year-end review of your business, it's likely you'll begin the new year with the same troubled systems, processes, and problems. Even if you had a great year, you want to grow. By establishing what did and did not work for you in 2017 you'll create a more powerful plan to support your growth in 2018.

Stubbornly low inventory conditions in a large swath of the country are behind the below-average share of first-time buyers in recent years, but there is gaining evidence that an increase in home building is around the corner, according to the National Association of Realtors's Jessica Lautz, managing director of survey research and communications, and Robert Dietz, chief economist at the National Association of Home Builders.

In one of the talks we give, we teach that business is about relationships. And that is so true: We entrepreneurs, after all, don’t do business with numbers or even organizations. We do business with people. So, business comes down to relationships — individual relationships. And, whether those relationships involve customers, vendors, suppliers or employees, business is very personal.
