From May 18:
Researchers at the University of Maryland were able pull away color and chemicals from a block of wood to leave it impressively see-through. The result is a material that is both stronger and more insulating than glass, with better biodegradability than plastic. "We were very surprised by how transparent it could go," said Liangbing Hu, who wrote about the project in Advanced Materials.

From Feb. 3:
On Wall Street, there's a saying that past performance is no guarantee of future results. When it comes to taxes, however, past performance is a great indicator of the types of deductions that businesses typically take each year.
Last winter the IRS released data on Schedule C filers. Here are some of the most popular tax deductions for small business that were claimed by sole proprietors as determined by the dollar amounts, starting with the largest category. The same types of deductions can be claimed by other entities — C corporations, S corporations, partnerships and limited liability companies (although there may be slightly different rules for some deductions).

From Nov. 16:
For the glazing industry, the election of Donald Trump casts the spotlight on one of his biggest pledges during the presidential campaign — the elimination of the Environmental Protection Agency, whose Energy Star standards are used to certify doors, windows and skylights.
"We are going to get rid of it (the EPA) in almost every form," Trump said during the GOP debate in March 2016. "We're going to have little tidbits left, but we're going to take a tremendous amount out."

From March 16:
When it comes to starting a business, it’s all about the budget. Maintaining a healthy bottom line is key if you want your fledgling venture to take flight and grow.
Too often though, small businesses make a variety of financial mistakes that allow their hard-earned money to leak away. For example, 21 percent of small-business owners say they claim less than half of their business expenses, which means they are dramatically overpaying their taxes. A large reason for this is the tendency not to claim small figures, which is a mistake: Even $5 expense claims can add up, so get in the habit of saving your receipts.

There is a deeper and more influential reality in why it's hard to get your "brand" noticed on the internet: It is nearly impossible to build brand preference for windows and doors. There is a bigger and more important preference among consumers and contractors.

A federal judge on Tuesday, Nov. 22, blocked an Obama administration rule to extend mandatory overtime pay to more than 4 million salaried workers from taking effect, imperiling one of the outgoing president's signature achievements for boosting wages.
U.S. District Judge Amos Mazzant, in Sherman, Texas, agreed with 21 states and a coalition of business groups, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, that the rule is unlawful and granted their motion for a nationwide injunction.

Protesters demonstrated in front of the Cleveland headquarters of Sherwin-Williams on April 20, coinciding with the paint manufacturer's annual shareholders' meeting. "Covering the world with LEAD PAINT," one banner read.
Months earlier, Occupational Knowledge International, a nongovernmental agency based in San Francisco, posted a Change.org petition calling on Sherwin-Williams and another paint company, PPG Industries, to stop using lead in their products.

Take a look at the following photo and see if you can name the OSHA trench safety violations.
There's a man in the trench — look closely, because you can barely see him. Then, there are the eight men surrounding the newly excavated hole, putting pressure on the excavation face. There's no sloping, shielding or shoring — nothing to hold the soil back if it ever started to move.
There's also no OSHA violation.
