Independent Contractor Compliance
From Feb. 11:
A $6.5 million settlement between Lowe's Home Centers and a class of its home improvement contractors was recently approved by a federal court judge in California. The contractors claim that they had been misclassified as independent contractors instead of employees. The settlement of this lawsuit permits us to focus on four takeaways (i.e., lessons) for other businesses that rely upon the use of independent contractors to supplement their workforce or that utilize an independent contractor or 1099 model.

From Aug. 12:
Sens. Jim Inhofe, R-Oklahoma, John Thune, R-South Dakota and Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, reintroduced the Lead Exposure Reduction Amendments Act on Thursday, Aug. 6, to increase compliance with the Environmental Protection Agency's Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule.
The senators bring a good deal of clout to the legislation, with Inhofe serving as chairman of the Environment and Public Works Committee; Thune as chairman of the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee; and Grassley as chairman of the Judiciary Committee.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently announced 62 enforcement actions that require renovation contractors and training providers to protect people from harmful exposure to lead dust and debris, as required by EPA's Lead-based Paint Renovation, Repair, and Painting standards.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
From April 15:
Recently, EPA's Administrator signed a final rule to extend certifications for certain individual renovators (those who received initial certification prior to March 31, 2011) under the RRP Program. Please be aware that the extensions only apply to individual renovators who must get recertification training within the timeframes explained below. They do not apply to firm certifications or individual renovators that need their initial certification.
