CN's grain revenue of CA$788,062,078 was CA$1,047,285 above its entitlement of CA$787,014,793, while CP's grain revenue of CA$709,499,416 was CA$1,500,513 above its entitlement of CA$707,998,903.

CN announced it has met all Dec. 31, 2018 milestones in its positive train control (PTC) implementation plan and applied on November 7 for a two-year extension to complete deployment and interoperability.
Mandated by the U.S. Congress to be installed on certain mainline tracks, PTC is a system designed to prevent train-to-train collisions, derailments caused by excessive speed, and certain unauthorized train movements on a given track segment.

Canadian Pacific and Unifor have ratified a new four-year agreement, the Class I announced recently.
The current collective agreement was set to expire Dec. 31. Unifor represents about 1,200 of CP's mechanical employees, who are responsible for maintaining rail cars and locomotives.
"Ratifying this agreement, especially in time for the New Year, is a positive step for our mechanical employees, our 13,000-strong CP family, customers and the broader economy," said CP President and Chief Executive Officer Keith Creel in a press release.

Coal, petroleum and chemical carload gains helped boost U.S. railroads' traffic totals for the week ending Dec. 22, according to Association of American Railroads (AAR) data.
U.S. railroads reported total Week 51 traffic volume rose 4.2 percent to 567,252 carloads and intermodal units compared with the same week in 2017. Carloads for the week increased 3.1 percent to 277,111 units, while intermodal volume climbed 5.3 percent to 290,141 units.

Canada's long-awaited electronic logging device (ELD) mandate should differ from the U.S. rule to avoid some of the pitfalls that befell the rollout of similar legislation there.

Peace Bridge Authorities and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) are launching a joint pilot program in Fort Erie, Ontario to screen commercial vehicles crossing the border with facial recognition, in a bid to reduce congestion at the busy crossing, The Buffalo News reports.
Trucks are the primary cause of traffic delays on the bridge, according to the Buffalo News, and officials hope that the program, which could lead to full deployment for trucker identification by mid-2019, will reduce congestion on the bridge by half.

Following growth of almost 10 percent in 2017, airfreight demand slowed in 2018 but still increased by 4.5 percent, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) reports.
Scheduled freight traffic measured in freight tonne kilometres grew by 4.5 percent compared to 9.5 percent in 2017.
Airfreight had picked-up sharply during the inventory restocking in 2017, before moderating in 2018 as demand drivers softened, which was impacted by the trade tension and declining import and export orders.

In line with the global trend of implementing autonomous vehicles in cargo operations, Sweden-based behavioral technology company Semcon announced that, in partnership with Swedish tractor manufacturer Lundberg Hymas, it will be developing new autonomous vehicles for the Swedish Civil Aviation Administration.
For the project, Semcon will develop the technology for the vehicle, and Lundberg Hymas will contribute its manufactured tractors.
