Canadian Pacific announced record operating income of CA$874 million for the fourth quarter, a 28 percent increase compared with the same period in 2017.
CP's revenue for the quarter climbed 17 percent to CA$2 billion from CA$1.7 billion a year ago. Q4 diluted earnings per share (EPS) fell 43 percent to $3.83 from $6.77 a year ago, however adjusted diluted EPS rose 41 percent to a new quarterly record of $4.55 from $3.22 in 2017, according to a CP press release.

The Canadian Pacific Railway is planning extensive work in its famed Mount MacDonald Tunnel, the longest railway tunnel in the western hemisphere.
"It's our current most important asset," John Leonardo, general manager for wayside train control and communications, said of the tunnel, which carries trains through Rogers Pass. "But it's tired. The hardware for power, communications, signaling — it's obsolete."

U.S. rail traffic continued to trend in railroads' favor during the week ending Jan. 19, with a 6.9 percent increase in carloads and intermodal units compared with year-ago volume, according to Association of American Railroads (AAR) data.
Railroads' carload traffic increased 7.4 percent to 258,833 units, while intermodal volume climbed 6.5 percent to 284,278 containers and trailers compared with volumes during the same week in 2018.

The Hamilton Port Authority's 2018 cargo results are in, revealing the highest volume of cargo handled through the port in more than a decade.
More than 11.6 million metric tonnes of cargo was imported or exported through the Port of Hamilton during the 2018 shipping season, an 18 per cent increase over 2017's total.
"Many Hamiltonians remarked that the harbour looked especially busy with ships this year," said Hamilton Port Authority President & CEO Ian Hamilton.
