The sudden escalation in the U.S.-China trade war could have serious consequences for Canada, according to economists at the Bank of Montreal.
In a client note recently, they predicted that, if all the tariffs the U.S. and China are threatening actually happen (which certainly seemed possible as of Tuesday afternoon), it would shave 0.8 percentage points off Canada's economy.

Canada’s trade deficit shrank in March but not as much as expected as exports, led by the energy sector, climbed higher.
Statistics Canada said recently the merchandise trade deficit for March amounted to $3.2 billion compared with $3.4 billion in February.
Economists had expected a deficit of $2.45 billion, according to Thomson Reuters Eikon.

The cost of trade between China and the U.S. is rising. Tariffs, or taxes, on $200 billion of Chinese imports to the U.S. rose from 10% to 25% one minute after midnight on May 10. "The tariff increase inflicts significant harm on U.S. industry, farmers and consumers," Douglas K. Barry, director of communications and publications for the U.S.-China Business Council, told MultiBriefs in an email. "American agricultural exports to China are particularly impacted. According to our recent survey, some states' exports were down 50%. The entire American agricultural sector is feeling the stress."

A top Trump administration cabinet member says the end of punishing steel and aluminium tariffs on Canada and Mexico is close at hand.

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending May 11, 2019.
For this week, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 529,263 carloads and intermodal units, down 3.7 percent compared with the same week last year.
Total carloads for the week ending May 11 were 258,641 carloads, down 3.1 percent compared with the same week in 2018, while U.S. weekly intermodal volume was 270,622 containers and trailers, down 4.3 percent compared to 2018.

Construction has begun on the first phase of the next major expansion at Germany's largest airport in Frankfurt, which will dramatically increase the airport's capacity, create thousands of new jobs, and a bring boost to the national and regional economies. Terminal 3 has been in the preparation stage for a number of years, with the building's basement level works already completed. The Port of Halifax contributed $1.97 billion to the economy of Halifax and Nova Scotia from operations in 2017-18, up 15 per cent from the previous year, according to a new economic impact report produced by Chris Lowe Planning and Management Group.
Through the Port of Halifax in 2017, Nova Scotia container exporters contributed over $2.58 billion to the province’s gross output.

El Niño is having a major impact on container traffic through the Panama Canal this year.
From May 28, the canal operator is going to reduce the draught at its Neopanamax locks to 43 feet, the latest in a series of depth reductions that have brought the permitted level down from 50ft at the beginning of the year.
The region is suffering from a protracted drought that has decimated the water in a lake that is used to top up water levels in the canal.
