Transport DIVE
Employment numbers indicate industry confidence in the direction the economy is headed. When fleets expect an uptick in business, they'll recruit more workers. If that doesn't happen, job numbers drop.
In the U.S., transportation and warehousing jobs declined by 588,000 in April and May combined. Canada's job market experienced similar declines. THRC's report estimated unemployment would reach 14.4% in Q2 in Canada, which was the U.S. rate in April.

Airfreight rates continued to fall in July as virus-related shipments gave way to a more normal mix of commodities and beefed-up passenger schedules presented greater transport opportunities for shippers.

Delta Air Lines posted a $3.9 billion pretax loss for the second quarter, ending June 30, on a more than $11 billion drop in revenue from last year.
Ed Bastian, the Atlanta-based carrier's CEO, said the dramatic loss "illustrates the truly staggering impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on our business."
The airline had anticipated a continued deterioration in revenue since earlier this year when it grounded more than 90% of its passenger flights due to government travel restrictions to combat the spread of the novel coronavirus.

In audio accompanying the videos provided to FreightWaves by witnesses Jeremy Barton and Alex Stewart, an alarm is followed by the sounds of metal meeting metal.

Shipping lines are using rollovers to bump up freight rates, "forcing" the vast majority of shippers to pay no-roll premiums.
According to Cas Pouderoyen, head of ocean freight at Agility, around 80% of shippers feel they have to pay premiums of $400 to $500 per container on the deepsea trades.
"Otherwise, odds are, you're going to be rolled," he said.
