President Trump said on Sept. 17 that tariffs on $267 billion of China’s imports to the U.S., its top buyer, will begin on Sept. 24 (10 percent) and rise in 2019 (25 percent) if Chinese concessions to Washington are not met. In response, officials in China have announced retaliatory tariffs of $60 billion on U.S. imports. Wilbur Ross, the commerce secretary, downplayed the economic impacts of the U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods to American businesses and consumers.

On March 9, 2018, Canada officially launched comprehensive free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations with Mercosur countries (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay).
As part of its Trade Diversification Agenda, the Government of Canada is expanding its impact assessment (IA) process for the negotiation of an FTA with Mercosur. As indicated in the news release, the IAs for the Canada-Mercosur FTA will include environment, labour, and gender, and will be used to inform these negotiations.

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) has announced its next president and chief executive officer will be Ian Jefferies, who currently serves as the organization's senior vice president of government affairs.
Jefferies will assume his new duties Jan. 1, following the retirement of current AAR President and CEO Edward Hamberger. Jefferies will continue to lead the organization's legislative efforts through the end of the year and coordinate with Hamberger to ensure a smooth transition, AAR officials said in a press release.

U.S. rail traffic rose 4.8 percent to 553,003 carloads and intermodal units for the week ending Sept. 15 compared with the same period a year ago, according to Association of American Railroads (AAR) data.
Total carloads for the week were 268,612 units, up 3.1 percent, while intermodal volume was 284,391 containers and trailers, up 6.5 percent, compared with the same week last year, according to an AAR press release.

Growing e-commerce and the run-up to end-of-year retail sales helped intermodal shipments gain in the weekly rail freight report from the Association of American Railroads.
Total U.S. rail traffic for the week ended September 8 was 502,208 carloads and intermodal units, up 4.1 percent compared with the same week in 2017. Volume totaled 253,293 carloads, up 2.6 percent, while intermodal volume was 248,915 containers and trailers, up 5.8 percent.

They're not guaranteeing improved grain transportation by this winter, but Canada's two biggest railways say they believe new locomotives, hopper cars and extra staff will make a difference getting crops to market in the months ahead.
That was the message Canadian Pacific and Canadian National railways presented Wednesday in Saskatoon at a meeting with farm groups, grain industry officials and members of the federal cabinet.

Hyundai Motor Company signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Swiss hydrogen technology company H2 Energy (H2E) at the IAA Commercial Vehicles 2018 in Hannover. The company is set to work on manufacturing 1,000 heavy-duty fuel cell electric trucks to the Swiss commercial vehicle market, between 2019 and 2023.
It comes at the wake of Hyundai recently unveiling a render image first look of its futuristic truck that runs with a fuel cell powertrain.

Convoy has authorized the sale of up to $198 million in new shares, PitchBook has learned.
The terms of the deal have not been announced and are subject to change. The trucking company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The full $198 million funding could value Convoy at up to $1.1 billion, per a PitchBook estimate. For the Seattle-based startup, that's a big jump from the $362.5 million valuation it reached in July 2017 with a $62.5 million funding round. In 2015, the year Convoy was founded, the company brought in $18.5 million at a valuation of $58.5 million.

Singapore Airlines (SIA) has launched a Thrucool product to transport high-value, time-sensitive and temperature-controlled pharma and healthcare shipments.
Thrucool offers dedicated cold chain services, said SIA in a statement, including "priority uplift and handling, quick ramp transfers at airports, cold room facilities, thermal blankets and covers for crucial insulation".
SIA has partnered with terminal operator SATS, ground handler Cargologic and Qantas Freight to launch an IATA CEIV Pharma certificated "quality corridor" along the Zurich-Singapore-Sydney route as an initial offering.

Great Lakes-Seaway Review
Shipments of iron ore on the Great Lakes totaled 6.4 million tons in August, an increase of 1.8 percent compared to a year ago. Shipments outperformed the month's five-year average by nearly 13 percent.
Year-to-date, the iron ore trade stands at 33 million tons, a decrease of 2.4 percent compared to the same point in 2017. The gap has been steadily decreasing over the course of the shipping season. At the end of April, iron ore shipments were down nearly 14 percent.

As the fall harvest approaches, Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway ships are hard at work delivering the large excess of grain remaining from the 2017 harvest to export markets. Canadian grain shipments via the St. Lawrence Seaway (from March 29 to August 31) totaled 4.3 million metric tons, up 13 per cent over the same period last year.
