Statistics Canada says manufacturing sales fell 1.3 per cent to $57.2 billion in July as sales in the primary metal and motor vehicle industries moved lower.
The agency says sales were down in 11 industries in July, representing 66.8 per cent of total manufacturing sales.
Economists had expected a decline of 0.2 per cent, according to financial markets data firm Refinitiv.

Canada's economy was unexpectedly unchanged in July, following four months of growth, as the country's mining, quarrying and oil and gas extraction sectors contracted, Statistics Canada data showed.
Analysts in a Reuters poll had predicted an increase of 0.1 per cent in July following a 0.2 per cent increase in June. Overall, 12 of the 20 industrial sectors monitored expanded on the month, while eight declined, the national statistics agency said.

Escalating trade tensions and a slowing global economy have led WTO economists to sharply downgrade their forecasts for trade growth in 2019 and 2020. World merchandise trade volumes are now expected to rise by only 1.2 percent in 2019, substantially slower than the 2.6 percent growth forecast in April. The projected increase in 2020 is now 2.7 percent, down from 3.0 percent previously.
