Canada could sign a new North American free-trade deal even with stinging U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods still in force, Finance Minister Bill Morneau said, with just over a week to go before a key deadline for the agreement.
Morneau made the remark recently in a speech as he was talking about concerns he has been hearing from the business community about trade.

Amid roiling markets, weaker commodities and intermodal shipments may be signaling a correction for U.S. rail freight.
The Association of American Railroads said traffic for the week ending November 17 was 546,541 carloads and intermodal units, up 0.04 percent from the same week a year ago. Carloads slipped 1.1 percent while containers and trailers were ahead by an identical 1.1 percent.
Three of the 10 carload commodity groups were better, topped by recent leader petroleum, 24 percent; grain, 7.6 percent, and miscellaneous carloads, 1.7 percent.

Parrish & Heimbecker Ltd. (P&H) late last week announced plans to move forward with the Fraser Grain Terminal in Surrey, British Columbia, after the project received permit approval from the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority.
To be served by CN and Canadian Pacific, the terminal will handle about 4 million tons of Canadian grain and specialty crop exports heading to markets in China and Southeast Asia annually. Construction is slated to start by year’s end and conclude in late 2020.

Alberta Premier Rachel Notley says she's disappointed with Ottawa's lukewarm response to the province's plan to ease oil bottlenecks by buying more rail cars.
She says it's simplistic to dismiss buying rail cars by saying they probably wouldn't arrive until a pipeline expansion were already under construction.
Alberta oil is currently selling at a discount of about $45 a barrel because of an oil glut due to a lack of pipeline capacity.

FedEx is purchasing 100 of the vehicles from Chanje Energy Inc and leasing 900 from Ryder System, Inc. The purpose-built electric vehicles will be operated by FedEx Express for commercial and residential pick-up and delivery services in the United States.

Construction of a new $200 million, 850,000 sq. ft. UPS facility in Caledon, Ont. is underway. The small package operations hub will provide additional processing and service capacity to the GTA.
Fully automated, the Caledon facility will sort up to 35,000 packages per hour and house a fleet of more than 200 package cars. The facility is anticipated to open in late 2020.

Worldwide Flight Services (WFS) will start handling cargo for Lufthansa Cargo at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol on 1 February 2019.
The new contract will see WFS handle around 30,000 tonnes per annum, serving the airline's trucked and flown volumes.
WFS already handles over 220,000 tonnes per annum for 70 airline customers at Schiphol, and expects to see further expansion of its operations in 2019.

The Port of Savannah has reported it moved more container cargo in October than any other month in the port's history, with 413,800 20-foot equivalent container units crossing its docks.
Containerized trade at the port has increased by 8 percent for the fiscal year to date (July-Oct. 2018), totaling 1.53 million TEUs — up 113,000 compared to the same period last year.
