The Western Producer
Prairie farmers were frustrated with Canada's railway companies in the winter of 2013-14.
Producers accused the railways of failing to move grain from inland terminals to port, which clogged elevators across Western Canada and slashed cash prices.
The railways' performance may have been inadequate, but it doesn't represent the state of the grain handling system in Western Canada, says the head of Canada's grain transport monitoring program.

The Manitoba government isn't prepared to let the Port of Churchill and the railway that serves it die, says Minister of Infrastructure and Transportation Steve Ashton.
And he's confident the federal government isn't either. Ashton said he met with his federal counterpart Marc Garneau in Ottawa as well as Winnipeg South Liberal MP Terry Duguid.
The port and line owned by Denver-based OmniTrax will be sold if more can't be earned from their operation OmniTrax Canada, president Merv Tweed said in media reports.

Congressional conferees on Dec. 1, 2015 reached an agreement on the Fixing America's Surface Transportation Act, a five-year surface transportation reauthorization bill and the first long-term bill of its kind in a decade. It comes after years of predeccesor-bill extensions and partisan bickering. Of interest to freight railroads are key provisions on safety enhancements for tank cars moving flammable liquids in the U.S. and electronically-controlled pneumatic train braking.

According to a report from Moody's Investor Service, container volume growth through U.S. ports will slow in 2016 as demand for U.S. exports stays weak and U.S. retailers work through high inventories.
Moody's said it expects container volume will rise 3 to 4 percent next year, down from 5 percent growth this year.
Strong growth in 2015 was due in part to a big influx of containers after West Coast dockworkers agreed to the terms of a 6-year contract in late February.
