From April 19: Today, the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour, issued the following statement regarding the collective bargaining negotiations between Canadian Pacific Railway, Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW):
"This afternoon, I spoke with CP Rail President & CEO Keith Creel and TCRC President Doug Finnson, and will be speaking with the IBEW shortly, regarding their collective bargaining negotiations. All parties are remaining at the bargaining table to continue their discussions."

From Jan. 11: Retailers and manufacturers grappling with an unusually tight trucking market are paying the steepest prices in years to keep their goods moving.
Freight demand had been ticking up for months, closely tracking the strengthening U.S. economy. The market got a boost from retailers needing to restock stores and distribution centers amid the biggest jump in holiday sales since 2011.

As the corporate scion of Hunter Harrison, Creel had helped the great man apply his "precision scheduled railroading" vision twice before, most recently at CN Rail. In 2012, when Harrison came out of retirement to smack CP out of its doldrums, it was just a matter of time before Creel jumped too.

From May 24: The Shell Starship, a highly aerodynamic Class 8 tractor-trailer designed to test the bounds of fuel efficiency and cut emissions, has been attracting a lot of attention during its cross-country trip.
CCJ caught up with the Starship caravan as it left Hammond, Louisiana, on its way to Biloxi, Mississippi. The truck, which began its trip in San Diego, is scheduled to end its 2,361-mile journey in Jacksonville, Florida.

From March 15: On March 9, FMA and six other industry associations wrote to the Honourable Mac Garneau, Minister of Transport, emphasizing the need for two important amendments to Bill C-49, the Transportation Modernization Act, now going through Paliament.
The first requested amendment would require the railways to provide the appropriate cost and pricing information to the Canadian Transportation Agency that would be made available in aggregated form to shippers attempting to resolve a rate dispute with the railways in a process called Final Offer Arbitration (FOA).

From May 24: The Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport, recently issued the following statement regarding the Royal Assent of the Transportation Modernization Act. Among other measures, the Act will enhance the traveller experience for Canadians and, most importantly, will create a world-leading approach to air passenger rights, and will also include new tools and benefits for rail shippers.
“I am pleased that the Transportation Modernization Act has received Royal Assent today, which shows the Government of Canada’s commitment to improving our transportation system.

From June 14: U.S. President Donald Trump's blistering attack on Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has driven bilateral relations to their lowest point in decades and left Ottawa with few options for averting a trade war with its much bigger neighbor. Trump blew apart a G7 summit in Canada over the weekend, blasting Trudeau as "very dishonest and weak" and raising the prospect of tariffs against auto imports, a move that would imperil the Canadian economy.

From April 19: With a strike deadline just days away, Keith Creel, Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd.'s chief executive, said the company will not be "held hostage" in negotiations and is willing to experience the short-term pain of a strike in order to ensure long-term sustainability.
"CP cannot be put in a position where we're held hostage," Creel told analysts on a conference call Wednesday, following the release of the company's first quarter results.

From April 5: Canada's two largest railways are hoping the spring thaw will help them recover from a winter of delays and complaints brought about by the combination of brutally cold conditions and unexpectedly high demand — and defrost the resulting icy relations with customers.
Canadian National Railway and Canadian Pacific Railway have faced intense scrutiny over extended shipping delays this winter that have created a backlog in grain shipments.

Truck News
From May 31: The United States is going ahead with tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum, says Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross.
The country announced it will not extend exemptions for Canada, Mexico, and the European Union that were granted when tariffs were imposed on the goods in March.
The deadline for the exemption was set for June 1. Trade-watchers had hoped the exemption would be extended as the U.S., Canada, and Mexico continue to negotiate a new NAFTA deal.
