Wilson demands answers on wind turbines

COPA
February 22, 2016
Queen's Park — Simcoe-Grey MPP Jim Wilson demanded answers today on why the Liberal Government approved the Wpd wind turbine project in Clearview Township when it clearly puts the lives of pilots using the Collingwood Regional Airport at risk, and will hurt the local economy.
"Mr. Speaker, given all these points, can the premier tell us why her government is ignoring the safety of the people of Simcoe-Grey, Canada's pilots and the local municipality, and allowing this project to proceed?" Wilson asked during Question Period.
Premier Kathleen Wynne turned the question over to Environment Minister Glen Murray, who replied that Nav Canada did not express any concerns about the turbines and their impact on the nearby Collingwood Regional Airport.
"The minister doesn't know what the heck he's talking about on this issue," Wilson said. "NavCan told me a year-and-a-half ago...that they didn't have any rules for this sort of situation because they didn't think any government would be stupid enough to build eight 500-foot wind turbines...close to a regional airport."

Margrit Waltz is an experienced pilot, but she was on a special flight when she landed in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.
A 42-year veteran of the skies, Waltz marked her 800th flight crossing an ocean, whether it be the Atlantic or Pacific.
She works as a ferry pilot, delivering planes to new buyers, but she didn't always intend to work in aviation. Waltz said she was once a television weather presenter in Germany, but her passion for flying was so strong she made it a career.
"It's a passion, it's love," she said.

For Iqaluit resident Jason Miller, whose stunning photo of northern lights now adorns the tail of First Air's newest airplane, there's no temperature too cold for taking outdoor pictures — as long as there's no wind.
"In -40 [Celsius] and no wind, I'm still happy to be out looking for northern lights," the longtime photographer, northern resident and pilot said.

Martin Maxwell remembers the night of June 3, 1944, quite well. With D-Day, the Allied attack on Nazi-occupied Europe, only days away, Maxwell and other glider pilots were summoned by Lt.-Gen. Frederick Browning, commander of I Airborne Corps and deputy commander of First Allied Airborne Army.
The general pulled no punches in his message to the men. "Some of you won't be coming back," he told them, advising them to write letters to their loved ones while they still had the chance.
It was a sobering message and good advice.

Inside a hangar in the San Francisco Bay Area, a young French entrepreneur is busy readying a small, odd-looking, bubble-shaped aircraft.
Not far away, on the way to Sacramento, less than 100 miles away, another start-up is rolling out the first serially produced units of a new concept of amphibious foldable aircraft so compact they can be kept in a standard car garage.

Sam Bousfield, CEO of Samson Motors and designer of the Switchblade flying sports car, recently unveiled the latest advances in the company's multi-year program to establish a viable flying car.
"The idea of landing at an airport, pushing a button to stow wings and tail, and drive to your destination not only brings us new-found freedoms, but by protecting the flying surfaces on the ground, you gain a much more viable mode of transportation," said Bousfield.
