Aviation biofuels on the up and up

Lufthansa probably thought it was on a public relations winner when it began operating flights using a mix of biofuel and regular jet fuel between Frankfurt and Hamburg in 2011. However, the "green skies" branding potential of lower-carbon-emission air travel took a dive when environment groups revealed the supplier was tapping fuel from palm oil plantations blamed for rainforest destruction.Partly lost in the furore were findings from the almost 1200 flights that the biofuel mix was not only reliable but delivered one per cent better efficiency.

Federal authorities were on high alert last year after receiving rare back-to-back threats directed at an international flight and several Canadian airports, newly released records show.
Ultimately, no attacks were carried out, but the threats — whose nature one border official termed "not a common occurrence" — were taken so seriously, they prompted nationwide law-enforcement bulletins and notifications to senior government officials.

Jet fuel slumps on gulf as supplies build to 3-month high

Jet fuel weakened on the U.S. Gulf Coast as the region’s inventories rose to the highest level in three months.
Stockpiles of the aviation fuel on the Gulf Coast, known as PADD 3, increased 491,000 barrels to 13.5 million in the week ended Feb. 15, the Energy Information Administration reported. That's the highest level since Nov. 9 and the first advance in three weeks.
Chorus Aviation says profit drops 35 per cent in fourth quarter, revenues grow

Chorus Aviation profits dropped 35 per cent in the fourth quarter as the airline was affected by higher aircraft maintenance expenses and foreign exchange losses.
The airline formerly known as Jazz said that profits were $14.7 million, a decrease from $22.7 million a year earlier.

Richmond jet fuel pipeline assessment suspended

B.C. Environment Minister Terry Lake has suspended the assessment of a proposed jet fuel pipeline to Vancouver International Airport.
Lake says the ministry needs to compile more information on land and marine-based spill preparedness and responses before any decision is made.
