AOPA New Zealand has taken an active role in shaping the way forward on Performance Based Navigation (PBN) and the move towards ADS-B surveillance in the region. The Organization is active and providing input on the needs of general aviation as part of the "New Southern Sky" working groups, where the New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is leading the implementation of this new system. The main challenge is to ensure that the GA VFR pilot is well informed and is not going to pick up the costs of changing a system that works now.

The Villeneuve Aviation Centre had an unexpected visitor.
Hans Bruening, a German pilot and businessman, arrived from Manitoba and was looking for a place to park his private business jet for a few days, while he scouted out potential organic café locations and paid a visit to his uncle in Edmonton.
"I was taking the gas refuelling truck to fill a small Cessna 172 at Centennial Flight Centre and he flagged me down and said 'Where can I park?'" said operations manager Evan Rose, who works out of the Villeneuve Airport.

Ektaa Pathria remembers seeing her father, Harish, launch himself out of airplanes for the first time when she was around four years old.
Harish was a paratrooper with the Indian Army, and Pathria would see him on practice missions, falling out of the sky with a parachute to slow his descent.
"I never really felt like, 'Oh, I want to do skydiving' or anything like that," said Pathria, now 26 and a flight instructor at the Waterloo Wellington Flight Centre in Ontario.

NDP MP Nathan Cullen took to the skies with Tom Clark to talk politics, career ambitions and macaroni and cheese.
The conversation was part of the West Block's Plane Talk series, which sees pilot and host Clark crammed into his Cessna 172 Skyhawk with political movers and shakers, asking them about their lives both on and off the Hill.

According to author Paul Bertorelli: The other day, I was floating along in the Cub listening to the radio chatter when it occurred to me that I hadn't heard a native English speaker for several minutes. I listened for several more and determined that, sure enough, there were no native English speakers on the frequency. Judging by the accents, there were Indians, Germans or Italians and at least one Chinese, but no American English speakers.
I'm not about to launch off on a nativist tear here, but quite the opposite.

Last week, House Republicans seemed to have shot down a controversial plan to peel off the nation's air traffic control (ATC) system from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). However, the war seems to be raging on as supporters of the proposal announced March 1 that the broad, sweeping six-year aviation industry reauthorization proposal would still try to push forward.

According to author Libby Bakalar: It's very loud, and highly — but highly — alarming. I have said many times that my last nerve has been frayed to the breaking point by a decade of parenthood coupled with flying in Alaska. And I am regularly convinced that the last 20 minutes of every flight in Alaska are my last 20 minutes on Earth.
