Chris Hadfield youth summit trumps Wings Over Gatineau air show
MetroNews Canada
If you're wondering why the Wings Over Gatineau-Ottawa air show has been cancelled, blame it on Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield.
The space traveler turned hero is hosting a youth summit at Vintage Wings of Canada June 30 and organizers just can't juggle the two events this summer.
"We are a very small, charitable organization, we function mostly with volunteers and it was just too onerous for the organization," said Vintage Wings Spokesperson Carl Martin.

Helicopter safety and the sleepy summertime blues
By Mark Huber
Summer — the fat season for helicopter EMS — is quickly approaching, and with it comes a spike in the monthly accident rate. That's what new data from the U.S. Helicopter Safety Team suggests. A study released in April from the USHST clearly shows that helicopter accidents and the percentage of fatal accidents increase as the temperature rises, peaking in July. The data is counterintuitive from the pilot point of view. Some of us equate the lazy, hazy days of summer with good flying weather, and things are more relaxed. That mindset could precisely be the problem, according to the USHST.

TSB of Canada finds wing icing and overloaded aircraft led to fatal crash
Thompson Citizen
In its 35-page aviation investigation report, the Transportation Safety Board of Canada has found that wing icing and an overloaded aircraft led to the fatal Gogal Air Services Limited C-GAGP Cessna 208B Caravan Snow Lake crash.
The plane, en route to Winnipeg, crashed in a wooded area approximately 0.9 nautical miles beyond the departure end of Snow Lake Airport Runway 21, which is 3,510-feet long and 75 feet wide.

Ageless Aviation Dream Flights take 8 veterans up in war planes
KOLN-TV
Decades after flying home from war, eight World War II and Korean War veterans flew in planes they hadn't been in since war time.
The last time Korean War vet Melvin "Bud" Edwards flew in a war plane, he was on his way home after being wounded by a Chinese hand grenade.
Edwards said, "They flew me back from Tokyo to Hoy. We was there for 3 days and then we went from there to San Francisco and then a couple days later we went from there to Denver. That was the closest air [base] that they had to get us home."

Preparing a veteran of D-Day for Its return to Normandy
The New York Times
The plane has no fixed seats, no flight attendants, no in-flight movie and no bathroom. It is not heated, insulated or pressurized. And on its last tour over France, somebody tried to shoot it down.
But recently, a septuagenarian war horse known as the Whiskey 7 took off from a grass airstrip in central New York to attempt its most ambitious post-armistice mission: a trans-Atlantic crossing to pay tribute to the young Americans who went to war in Europe and those who never came home.
