Canadian pilots calling for tougher measures against lasers
CTV News
Shine a laser at your cat and you'll be in for hours of fun. But point it at an airplane and you could end up in jail.
Recently, the FBI began offering up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest of anyone who aims a laser at an aircraft. And though the reward is specific to the U.S., it's a problem Canadian pilots want to see addressed as well.

By Garth Wallace

Anti-spam and COPA
COPA
On July 1, Canada's new anti-spam legislation will come into effect. Once the law is in force, it will help to protect Canadians by prohibiting the sending of commercial electronic messages (CEM) without the recipient's consent — implied or express.
There are three government agencies responsible for enforcement of the new law: The Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), the Competition Bureau and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner. The new law provides that a CEM must contain the following information.

Jailbreak has aviation experts rethinking regulations
Maclean's
Quebec police are still hunting for three men who escaped from Orsainville Detention Centre near Quebec City by helicopter on Saturday. Few details of the brazen escape are being released, and it is not clear whether the helicopter was piloted by a friend of the escapees — three men awaiting trial on charges of drug trafficking, gangsterism and murder — or if it was hijacked and the pilot was forced to touch down in the prison yard.

The Chronicle Herald
It doesn't happen often, but just for a moment, Doris Stevens didn't have the words.
Only minutes earlier, she made the pilot sitting beside her blush when she asked if he was trying to touch her.
But awe and joy were etched on her face when asked to describe what it was like to fly 610 meters over the Annapolis Valley in a Cessna 172.
The Liverpool, Nova Scotia, woman celebrated her 102nd birthday and her family arranged for the flight in the small plane for the adventure-loving great-grandmother.

National Post
More than a kilometre above the dense forests of Vancouver Island, Richard Johnston suddenly found himself piloting a 1,500-kilogram float plane without power.
"The prop came to a grinding halt," said the veteran trail lawyer. "It was fairly evident to me I had suffered a catastrophic failure."
Flying solo in a 1967 Cessna 185E Skywagon float plane historically, a favourite of Canadian bush pilots — Johnston was travelling between his home in Nanaimo, British Columbia, and Bamfield, a remote community of 150 on the western edge of Vancouver Island.
