Soaring at 3,000 feet in a glider with just the wind and freedom to fly through the sky is what 16-year-old Cadet Sergeant Max Warren got to do this past summer while earning his private glider pilot license. This was a culmination of three months of one night a week ground school locally then applying for the glider flying summer program, more ground school once selected.

CAE and Aviation Performance Solutions (APS) have announced an extension of their partnership to provide comprehensive academic and in-flight Upset Prevention and Recovery Training (UPRT) to flight instructors and student cadets attending CAE Oxford Aviation Academy flight school programs. Student pilots will receive Basic UPRT training with options for an upgrade program. Instructors will go through a Professional Pilot UPRT program.

The traffic crash that almost killed John Cowan happened during rush hour on the last day of the Calgary Stampede. With traffic gridlocked on the Deerfoot Trail, a STARS helicopter ambulance saved precious minutes, dropping gently into the crash site. The medical team secured the unconscious patient and started treatment, even as the agile aircraft lifted off and sailed over the city to the hospital.

The awards will be presented at the Oct. 25 Silver Wings Awards gala at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) South Terminal along with $10,000 in scholarships to deserving students in the fields of flying, engineering and aviation management in programs from all over British Columbia.

It could soon cost more for some aircraft to fly the friendly skies. In President Obama's fiscal year 2013 budget, he is proposing a $100 per flight user fee. The fee would apply to general aviation aircraft like medical, cargo and charter flights.

The Whistler Health Care Centre's helipad remains an emergency concern, as the current flight path needed to land single-engine helicopters requires additional tree removal work that Vancouver Coastal Health is not willing to take on. An employee from VCH, the medical service provider that operates the clinic, spoke anonymously with concerns that the helipad currently only allows for the landing of twin-engine helicopters, the type of aircraft used by B.C. Ambulance.

West Kootenay residents' eyes were drawn skyward late last month as the roar of jet engines broke the silence. A Royal Canadian Air Force CF-18 Hornet fighter jet arrived at the West Kootenay Regional Airport in Castlegar. The jet was piloted by Selkirk College graduate, Captain Max Cameron. Cameron took the opportunity to combine his air force required flight time with a visit to the Selkirk College Aviation facility and his aviation roots.

Ottawa police are looking for the public's help to find two men who spray-painted a swastika on a Canadian War Museum airplane in August. They said two men, who arrived in separate four-door dark coloured vehicles, spray-painted a swastika and 'offensive message' on a Royal Canadian Air Force plane in the early morning hours.

The college is tackling the nation-wide research task by investing in technology. WMU has been chosen to join the Center for Excellence Partnership to Enhance General Aviation Safety, Accessibility and Sustainability, a federal consortium of universities led by Purdue University that will find ways to create sharing partnerships between academia, industry and government for general aviation and safety topics over the next decade.
